    Late Report 7/3 Norfolk Canyon

Headed out of Rudee at 4:00 ish got to the SW tip of the canyon and there were about 4 boats working it so I headed up a little further north. Found some rips that looked fishey, got the spread out and after about 30 minutes the gay bar gets crushed. Stuck a nice 60 lb YF in the boat, get the spread back out and short rigger goes down, popped it a couple times and within seconds the center green machine spreader bar gets crushed and end up breaking the fish and bar off.....bummer.....fished the area for a little while longer managed to scrap up one more fish on the long rigger and stuck him in the box. Circled, circleed and couldn't get any more bites, a few more boats had moved in by that time. I worked across the canyon to the south wall just north of the pots, nothing, came back up north to the orginal area and no more hits. Pulled in the rigs, ran 1.5 miles over to the tile hole and dropped for a 1-1/2 hours or so, caught our limit relatively quickly along with a few seabass. Put away the deep drop rods and figured I would run in and check out a couple areas that looked good on the way out. Water was beautiful inside of the canyon all the into the fingers, up to 78.5 degrees and full of life. Ran across a huge school of bait down 50 feet or so, made a turn back put out the spread and within 15 minutes hooked up, got him to the boat. Made another couple passes and pulled a couple more off and stuck one more in the boat. Had my cooler full and one fish box filled and one empty, but no more ice to stick in it so we called it a early day and started running back in dodging sea turtles at 2:30 back at the dock fueled back up by 4:30. Plenty of fish between the three of us on my boat so we were all content.
Couldn't ask for a pretty day on the water.
Ended up 4 for 8 60-70 lb class YFT.
    21 tiles and couple seabass

    bars

....had a couple hits on the gay bars and one on the green machine bar down the middle. Put out a blue and white bar down the middle after loosing the gm bar and they wouldn't touch it. Most of the other hits came from anything b/w that on the shortrigger behind the spreader bar. Only had one hit on a long rigger which was a b/w seawitch......
I was at disadvantage with my main guy not showing up to go with me. I had two friends that I took that fish but not offshore very often at all. Once every two years or so at best......I was rigging, driving, gafffing....made them reel the fish in. We got grassed up early before the first fish while I was at the helm and my guys never checked the baits. My fault....should have told them to reel them in and check them. I couldn't see any danglers from my perspective so I assumed they were fine. Sure we would have had more hits on the hoos if they weren't served with grass......
