    Large bullets

Tim, are there many guys using the large bullet style lures in their spread nowadays? ie the Big Blue, large bomboy bullets, extra large a.p, 12 inch skirted metal jets and so on. What would be the favoured application for this style artificial?

Appreciate your observations and those of anyone else familiar with the fishery - dknott, reel fool, etc.

    best regards

I dont know if this helps but I have a large bullet jetted that is similar to a big blue or baby blue kinda in between but every time we run it on the stinger the thing gets ripped by the utmost variety:blue and striped marlin dorado wahoo tuna sails, you name it.We even caught a yellowtail on it off of San Diego.I love that style lure.

At the right time of year in Kona, HI these are very popular (usually starting in late winter). The Bomb by Marlin Magic is the biggest lure at 16" and produces some really big fish, the next size down is Big Blue 12" and it is also another productive lure. Guys like to run these in the long rigger / short riggers position. They run straight and subsurface so they are a pretty easy target for the fish and color is important, the next size down again is Baby Blue 9 1/2" (Medium Rocket in catalog) and Infant Blue 7 3/4" (Small Rocket in catalog). These last two are particularly effective with a solid blue color with Blue back Silver belly outter and solid black with glitter as the inner, we rig them with a single stiff 10/0 7691S or 9/0 Jobu Down for the Medium and the Small gets an 9/0 or 8/0 Jobu Down. These lures really produce when they are in the bottom of the trough yet come up and dishrag, they also work well when they're stealth with black smoke behind them. Gene Vander Hoek on Sea Genie II release 1/3 of his billfish in 2008 using the 9 1/2" lure.

Other bullets, Bomboy's Bomb is a decent lure, but Aloha lures Erick Rusnik makes a lure called Deep Six that is another medium size bullet killer, it's all mirrors and get crushed.

Things kind of Eb and flow on lures, The Bomb with Blue back white shell produces great and you can run 11/0's in it, for this lure your really need a double hook rig to act as a rudder, the nice thing about this shape (and all bullets) is that their shape slides through a Marlin's mouth easier and get really solid hookups...Almost every boat in Kona has a bullet of some kind on the Long Rigger and or stinger...

Now the new killer is the "Offshore" by Marlin Magic, really similar to Elkins Popsicle (another awesome killer)...This lure has been one of the best kept secrets over the last year or so and with a single stiff hook rig the hookups are killer. Funny lure though, some produce better than others it all depends on how they track I guess, this shape wanders a bit, which the fish love, but is not so erratic they have problems eating well. I was lucky enough to be fishing with Marlin when we tested the first one and we ended up catching a Blue that weighed 440 (died because it got body wrapped).

If you want to see the shape, it's on our web at the below address, but it's labeled wrong (called The Bomb) and Jason (Melton Web Guy) will probably fix this by days end on the 21st so check it out quick!!!!

    Hi Tim,

Just picked up on something. What's the advantage to having the Jobu Down?

I hope Steve C and the other guy (Gordon?) had fun pulling on those big thresher sharks. I was wondering whether you'd been able to get out there with them? I'm sorry I wasn't able to properly coordinate the order I had planned for him to collect from you, things have been manic the last fortnight.

How is everything? Check out these babies...I haven't pulled them for Marlin this yr...only for da Hoo's...Was thinking of putting one in my Marlin spread w/ a 180 or single hook rig.
