Lahaina Docks Report for Tuesday 8-26-08

    Lahaina Harbor, Maui
    Wednesday 8-27-08

    Aloha Folks!

Ono Noah here wishing everyone a wonderful day! Here in Lahaina today we got blue skies, calm waters, and smiling faces all around. Yesterday, 8-26-08 -- it was Gilles Auger from Quebec, Canada out on his first saltwater fishing trip.

Jimmy Davenport and Charity Hein from Plant City, Florida had an absolute marvelous day out on the water. The ocean was exceptionally calm and smooth, like sheet glass. Captain 'Skillet' and Yukka had been up since midnight getting the bait fish ready for the trip. At about 3:30 A.M., they headed out through the serene pacific en route to the fishing grounds. At about 5:50 A.M. they had made their destination, and proceeded to drop in a live Opelu bait. 3 minutes later they had their first mahi in the bag. It didn't take long to start feeding those Mahi, and instantly they had one, two, ... three hooked up. Captain Skillet was noticing a few 'grey suits' hanging out in the area, and all of a sudden the 50lb. Shimano reel started screaming out line. As Yukka began to clear the lines, the short corner started screaming out line. It took about 16 minutes to bring the first bronze whaler to the boat, Yukka estimated it to be about 80 lbs. The second bronze whaler was brought to the boat in about 10 minutes and it was estimated at about 150 lb. We never target sharks, if one hooks up, we bring it to the side of the boat, and release. Captain 'Skillet' started the troll again, this time using his special 7 inch artifical funnel jet lure with purple, pink shading. About 15 minutes into the troll, a nice boil, and a nice tuna hooked up. A few more mahi, couple sheebs, and altogether -- a nice day of fishing!

Charity Hein told me personally, "This was my best catch ever!"

Jimmy Davenport took me aside and sincerely stated "That was the most fun I've had in a long time!"

Special thanks to Captain 'Skillet' and Yukka, keep up the good work fellas!

Through the trials and tribulations we face on a daily basis, I would like to seperate those from the good times that we share. I appreciate all the positive feedback and insight provided by you folks, my motivation comes through your enthusiasm and input. Warmest Aloha from yours truly, Ono Noah

    Mahalo

Thanks for the pic and good work to the crew!

    Ono,
I've never been to Hawaii. I'm just curious why you guys hang all the fish. Here we usually throw them on the docks for a pic and on to the fish cleaners why they are still cold. Can you guys sell the catch to the restaurants or does the catch belong to the party that booked the boat?

We our one of the few charter companies that allows our customers to keep their catch. The fish were pulled out of the iced-down fish bags and placed on the boom solely for display purposes and photo opportunities. The fish hang for no longer than five minutes, and then either cut/prepped/bagged for the customers, or put directly in the iced-down tubs and delivered immediately to the restaurants or fish markets.

In short, yes we allow our customers to keep their catch. All of it. If they don't want the fish, we are more than happy to subsidize our income with fish money.

All you need to do is get a permit to sell. You can't sell to the rest. but you can sell to the local fish market. That is what is don down in CB with the fish the charter guys don't have any use for.
