Overall, fishing has improved.
Last week--Tue, half day--caught a nice spearfish, released. several other boats caught spearfish & stripeys this day too.
Thur--we were fishing for ono (wahoo) in "ono lane" (fishing up the coast in 40-60 fathoms for ono, this is about 300-400 yds from shore) and had a surprise bite, double header in fact. several other boats that day had similar bites. we caught 2 Ahi (yft). 98 & 118 lbs. biggest of the day was over 170 lbs. others I heard of were 136 & 123 lbs. nice day. also had another Ahi bite in the porpoise school (1400 fathoms) but it came unglued.
Sat--spend most of our trip in ono lane, where we caught 1 ono (half day)
Tue--about 10 a.m., had a nice striped marlin take the long corner (made me happy--I had just rigged the new lure the night b4, so on its first day on the job, it got bit). it came unglued though, so we went back to not much. slower day. end of trip, we sunk a live bait in 70 fathoms looking for a shark or AJ. 3 lb Aku turned into a 29 lb Mahi Mahi
Wed--we spent some time inside catching aku (used for live bait) & trolling for marlin. there were enough boats live baiting the area, doing not enough to prove there were fish to targer, so we ventured out to a FAD. lots of small yft & aku there. after catching an aku & 2 small yft on the first pass, we were circling around for pass #2 when the short corner took off (black/purple MoldCraft Super Wide Range). 350 yds later, we were coming back on a nice blue one. 5 minutes into the battle, it came unglued--it seemed to be hooter wrapped, not hooked. happens alot here.
few more passes, few more tunas. after an akuaku got mauled by another critter on the way to its last boat ride it would ever take, we set up to live bait. no takers on the liveys so we switched to chunking the FAD. the shibis (yft under 100 lbs) showed up so we started catching some "bigger" small yft. jigged a few (lost a jig to a mystery bite, but I venture that it might have been a marlin--line was chaffed & smeared black--guess it could have been a shark too) & chunked a few.
camera is on the boat, so I don't have all the photos. will post more later
the bite has improved quite a bit overall. 2 weeks ago, there was a really good week of blue marlin fishing--about 5-6 fish 500-822 lbs caught--some released, some boated--its been fairly consistent then, but more smaller blues & stripeys, with a few spearfish, being caught--this is a good indicator that the blues are starting to show for the summer.
there was a nice floater found today by 3 boats w/about 50 mahi mahi on it. they managed to collect about half of them. ono fishing has been most consistent, with the boats whop put in their time getting one or more every day
