i used a kite on a rigger last september fishin for giants on stellwagon. our first time using kites. capt had, but he doesn't fish anymore, he just barks orders! lol. i also was fortunate enough to have a 6'8" person on board to 'help' assist the kite up in the air, while another ran the clip up to the top. we had the kite on a Avet 6:1 ratio and it was a pain in the a$$ to bring that kite back in. along with occasionally getting tangled when trying to launch, it seemed to work out for the most part. this year however, i'm bringing a helium tank and some balloons. saw plenty of those last year, figure it may be a little easier.....we'll see.
You are begging for screw ups and lost fish trying to use a downrigger for a kite application.
I made it easy on myself:
