There really is no set distance between your kite and first, second or third clip. It is all personal preference to tell you the truth. You don't want them too far out so you can't see the long bait or too close that the fish don't approach. One of my kite secrets (well not really a secret) is to use floss as a kite stopper. Allows you to adjust the distance between clips and kite to compensate for variable wind conditions. When the wind is lite and you use a helium balloon, the kite may be almost vertical. Then you don't need a big distance between the clips. Also the fewer connections you have in the kite line the less points for failure you have. Sucks to watch your $100 kite fly off and then sink into the deep blue. Also another trick is to leave a small balloon barely inflated tied to the top/middle of your kite incase it does break away. This will keep it floating and easier to see in rough water. Hope the info helps.
