Bert - I don't think I was criticizing anyone - Just stating my beliefs. There is nothing wrong with a picture - as long as the meat isn't just going to waste - a rotting carcass in a dump is a waste to me.

At the same time, I don't want to be criticized for NOT Killing a marlin - even if it is legal for me to do so.

and to answer Scott Kirby - I have fished out of Kona and have chosen captains that release billfish over killing them - Maybe I could have caught more fish with another captain, but I was willing to take that risk - and have caught at least 1 billfish on each trip. That is a trade-off I am willing to make.
But it is certainly not one the everyone should make.

"what you catch and what you believe have nothing to do with each other". Say what ? You better believe you are in a killing sport. Not a preservation sport. It is ironic to fish prime bill fish waters chancing a kill and come on this board and preach conservation. The reason most bill fishermen got into the game was, seeing a hang at the scales. If the post was about over fishing, your mahi statement would have been noted but it wasn't. Maybe you have enough money to release a winning billfish. I know many with a gold pocket that will hang one in a heartbeat. I also no many with a cotton ball in a pocket that will eat one in a heartbeat. I hope I have not pissed you off but I respect a man for what he does, And when he posts a picture or a great catch. I hope you will give the same respect. Good fishermen do that. They show respect also. There is not a perfect way to combine killing and conservation in the same sentence. If you feel weak in the knees when killing a billfish that is understandable. Some people do not…..

the above remarks do not reflect on my personal views of hanging a bill fish but to protect a man that does or did. Many great fishermen have had their day in the sunshine. I will also. That you can take to the bank…..flat

Hunting is a killing sport, fool. That is one of the best things about fishing, you can enjoy over and over again with one fish untill some nimrod kills it. I am not saying that I don't kill fish, All I am saying, is that most people who bring billfish in, and say it's to feed the family, are just trying to justify their poor judgment.
Money has nothing to do with it either, If you are doing this sport, You have more money then most!

If you target billfish and whether you release them or not eventually you are going to kill them whether you intend to or not quite a large % die after being released either from fatigue or injury from gear,j-hooks,tail wrapped.i really thought this would have been brought to attention already but i guess not.

fishing in a 3rd world country myself, I have a different aproach about this killing for the locals to eat theory. If I WAS going to go fishing for LOCAL people's food , witch i do sometimes, Is killing a shark (way to many around). Billfish are rare where i fish due to the over-exploration by longliners and nets so killing a breeder is in NO way going to help my goals of having fun. So far this year all billfish caught there were released (dont know if all survived but for sure there is hope). It must be great to comeback from fishing with a 700+ Marlin, sure it will bring lots of attention. When dead fish picture comes up, my 1st reaction is too think "why did he kill it", failing to remember many of these ppl killing them are great fisherman who RELEASE many small ones. Because where i fish there are not as many as where u guys fish, i "feel" for them more. Maybe if I was in a place where i release billfish everyday I would probably not care about killing one once in a while.
Just some people fish for fun, food, reputation, show off...

In the end, im happy when the line breaks i guess

Ok... I've watched some since my original input... Sea Ment just nailed the question... This is not a debate as to whetehr or nit... Its supposed to be a discuusion about why do people heckle. If I see a pic of a dead billfish that is gonna be eaten or is taken in an effort to better improve ones economic well being in a tournament, I applaud the catch... If I see one decked for shits and grins and that great grey dock side pic, although put off, I usually keep my trap shut.
I think John was touching the tip of the iceberg about bashing in general... What is the point of bashing?... Serves absolutely no purpose except to derail the quality of a thread or a site as a whole. If someone is excited about a catch, maybe their personal first or best of something. What compells some irate jag off to piss on their parade? It gains nothing. Dosn't make the original guy look bad. Just makes the basher look like hes packin a dinky winky.
I see a guy holding a ten pound dolphin. His first. I am not so old and crusty that the memory of my first has faded. I remember that joy and jubilation like it was yesterday. Then some guy jumps in "that ain't nothing" or "In our area we catch 40 a day that could eat that one"... He just wrecked the feel good moment for not only the poster, but all those aboard the boat and all the readers as well... To me that guy needs to be taken out back for a good Deepin...
I'm happy to say that it doesn't happen much on SFC... Its what seperates us from the rest of the dump sites out there. I hope it stays that way...

If you're going to open your big mouth--then at least get the facts right & learn to read. My name is Jeff--look in the signature, then read it. J E F F.

and we release most of our fish, as most of the boats here do today. & just about every charter boat in Kona kills fish occasionally, just not on the day you fish with them.

I believe this is what Admin is talking about

    BFWM

There was no need for alot of the comments made on there. If you are worried about conservation and saving something for the next generation, fine. I can relate to that, but to bring down a fine report with bashing over your personal beliefs is wrong. The fish was not wasted (except for the small amout I had frozen when the freezer shit the bed.)

We all complain about soaring gas prices and the depleted oil supply, but I don't hear anyone bashing each other for driving trucks and suv's. It is the same concept.
