Decided to do something we haven't done before, went offshore with just me and the wife, Lanie. We left Saturday afternoon and overnighted at Rudee Inlet to put us closer to the action. Left Rudee at 4:45 AM, I do like Rudee Inlet at night, first it's lit up like a Christmas tree, then after you clear the inlet, there are zero other obstacles to worry about.
Headed SE to bumpy quartering seas and found 72 degree water just south of the southern tip of the cigar and put lines in at 20 fathoms. Lost three wahoo, two on a red/white stretch 30 (on wire) and one on a wahoo wacker. Headed east looking for the break and found it where a mini fleet had already been working between 50 and 150 fathoms. Great marks, A-scope lite up a lot in the whole area so we stayed and worked it. (Weed free BTW). First hit was a quadruple but with only 2 of us on the boat, we did good to get 2 fish to the boat. Next hit was a triple and we got 2 to the boat. Talk about challenging fighting multiple hookups with only Lanie and me. But she did great, even her first time on the gaff. Ended the day with 4 nice YFT losing that many as well. Couldn't run too many lines with just 2 on board but I thought we did well under the circumstances. Tried to get our last 2 for a limit but with the reduced amount of daylight this time of year, we had to pack it in early and head in. Most of our hits were on witches with hoos but one YFT came in on my stretch 30 down deep. Here's a few pics. No video this time....nobody available to run the camera. ![]() ![]() This is Lanie's first ever gaff shot....but hey, it's tuna in the box. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mike Hydra-Sports 2900VX SeaDuction MMSI # 338-018-823 |

What can I say....4 kids....only my 14 year old likes to fish anymore but didn't want to go this weekend. The other three are in college and have other interests. And my 14 year old gets board real fast but I'm trying my best to keep him interested in fishing but it's tough. He is excited about striper season though because we don't have to go 60-80 miles to catch fish.
But the reason for Fish Dad was as I sat down at the computer on the Virginia DMV website searching for custom plates, I wanted something with fish or angler related. Most everything was taken but Fish Dad popped up on the screen so I thought....I fish and I'm a Dad. So my plates say Fish Dad so I just made that my screen name too. ![]() |
