Yes, Rich, those big bulls are really something special and as you can see from the pictures, there are still good numbers of them down in The Baja. I believe that the restrictive bag limits on them have helped in that regard. When there are lots of the big ones around, a half dozen make for a lot of sport and a big pile of meat.
It's a shame that dolphin don't seem to get the respect that they deserve from some, I guess because they are fast growers and eager eaters. (They are a whole different ballgame when they are deep and aren't up on the top where they can be spotted and where they usually hit surface stuff with abandon. Only those who fish deep know how great that kind of fishing can be!) To me, I think that they are among the most beautiful fish in the ocean, they are wonderful eating, up until now they have remained abundant and available in tropical water conditions the world over, they are great jumpers (I myself really love fish that jump), and those big bulls are among the best fighters of them all, on a pound-for-pound basis way outdoing some of the far more glamorous species in stamina, showiness, and breath-taking color. Yeah, whether you call them dolphin, mahi-mahi, dorado, or whatever, that is one great fish and even when we were bait and switch fishing for nothing but blue or black marlin, when a giant bull showed up after the bar teasers, it was hard, if not impossible, for the hardest of the hard core big marlin guys to resist pitching a bait back to him and having him "spoil" our big marlin hunt for a while. Those humongous bulls were my kind of interuption whenever they showed up. Yowza! One of my favorite pictures of one that interrupted some big marlin fishing with humongous lures. Check out where my mate is leadering this fish from! Check out our Dorado Book and some of the articles about catching them on the website at www.fredarchersworldoffishing.com |
