Jody and Susy return to Guatemala and have a great fishing day!

Susy and I got a well deserved day of catching (not fishing) in our first trip since returning from the States. We are now here for the rest of the season with our return tickets booked for next April.

Fishing aboard Furioso, we ran to a popular and usually productive area. We found the largest group of spinner dolphins I have ever seen and we hoped yellow fin tuna were swimming below. But after an hour and a half all we had to show were 2 nice dorados, one pushing 25 lbs. Despite all the spinners and probable tuna, we decided to pick up and head further offshore. We ran for almost an hour without seeing more spinners but the water looked blue and we decided to put our lines in the water and troll. Three teasers and 2 baits went into the spread and within minutes sails were hitting the teasers. Susy pitched baits, hooked and released two very big sails! We sighted two marlin playing with the teasers but couldn’t get them to eat a pitched bait. After some time had gone by, one of the trolled ballyhoo got wacked. I dropped the line back, thinking it was probably a sail and to my great surprise ended up hooking a 300 lb blue marlin on 30 lb test! Fish on! The blue exploded from the water in a series of jumps and took the boat completely around. After a 1 ½ hr battle of jumps and deep dives I finally was able to release the blue. Both of us were exhausted. In that time the boat had moved 3 miles and we found another large school of spinner dolphins. It was now 2:45 pm and we were 47 miles offshore. We put out 2 daisy chain teasers, 3 cedar plugs and that was all we needed to catch 16 yellowfins ranging from 20 to 40 lbs. We picked up at 3:28pm, two minutes ahead of schedule and headed home with 2 nice dorado and the 16 yellowfins packed on ice.

What a great welcome home trip. The area we fished was loaded with bait and in the days since has been producing multiple shots of sailfish and marlin.

Looks like another great season in Guatemala! Come visit us!
