hey guys, finally getting back online after all the stuff this week. First and foremost - CONGRATS to all the winners in this years event!!! The 50th annual event was really a great time, the Big Rock folks really have their act together and this event just keeps getting better every year - we can't wait for next year!!
we fished Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri this year. This plug fishing is still pretty damn new to me and we are still working to get it dialed in but feel we are really starting to get it figgered out. Monday we started a little down the beach from the main bite but ended up there a little later in the day - but we never managed anything to speak of. Tuesday was our big shot. We found a nice pc of water without a ton of boats around. I added a couple of my old favorite teasers to the mix late morning and about 20 minutes later had a nice mahi in the boat. Then about 30 minutes later - there she was!! A big fat mama came up on my port teaser, beat it up a bit then sucked the big squid right off the end of it and disappeared. A couple seconds later she came back up behind the stbd side teaser and proceeded to beat the snot out of it before dropping back down a bit. Just about thought she was gone when I see a huge flash right behind the boat - she charged in and SMOKED the stbd short rigger. She pulled the entire 300-400 yds of 130# mono topshot off in a matter of seconds and was down to the braid backing. We got the spread cleared and Herb was screaming we had to go back NOW - so back we went. What a beautiful ESPN shot we would have made - big rolls of blue water rolling across the transom into the pit, reel still screaming, all hell breaking loose!! Then, for whatever reason she was gone. I was very proud of my crew for getting it all up quickly, everybody did their jobs. It just wasn't meant to be - sad too because we got a very very good look at her and she was at least 500! She hit the exact same lure, in the exact same spot, as our big fish in the Swansboro tourney.
Thursday was a long slow day for us - not a sniff all day.
Friday we ran with the rest of the crowd back to the parking lot offshore of the Big Rock. Got to the bite pretty quick, and then I had a hard hit on my bridge pole. It was taking a long fast run on an 80 - and then the hook pulled - just a couple seconds before I called in the hookup. Oh well. Got it all back out and about 20 minutes later we had our last shot. Fish snuck in and popped out the stbd long rigger clip but did not hook up. Herb grabbed the reel and started smoking it in and here it came - running right up from behind it. I yelled to keep it coming and as it got closer to the boat the fish manged to grab it and take off. Unfortunately for the fish it grabbed a lure on a 130 - it did not get too far. Cleaned it all up but never had to go back - Jim reeled it right in, leadered it to boatside for a couple pics and to get the hook out and let it go - nice 150# blue marlin.
That was it for us. We enjoyed the week and learned a lot, and feel we are ready for the rest of the season.
THANK YOU for all the support and well wishers I have heard from this week - it is very much appreciated. If I can get the pics off the bossladys camera I will get'em posted up here.
