    Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo in feb/Mars

    Hello!

Me and a couple of friends are planning to go on a fishing trip/getting away holiday from the Swedish winter. We have almost decided to go to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo but we would really appreciate some good advice on this destination or maybe an alternative destination that you like better.
We are going away in mid February or the beginning of Mars and are staying away for at least 3 weeks, as far as I know this is a decent time to fish in Zihuatanejo but a little early for tuna. Does anybody have some experience fishing in Zihuatanejo this time of the year? Is there some chance of catching tuna if we go far out?
Fishing is the number one priority for the trip but we are a group of younger guys(22-26) and we would really like to party some as well. Is Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo a place that people go to on their spring breaks? We went to Cabo san lucas last year (not during the spring break period) and thought it was a pretty perfect combintion of fishing and party.
I found this forum when I did some research before our Cabo trip and I think its an amazing place to find information about game fishing. I cant find to much info about Zihuatanejo but if we go there I will put some effort in a trip report and hopefully have a lot of pictures to show

I was there in January. As far as the partying... its not as "build up" as Cabo and is more of an old town with a couple of newer hotels in it. Fishing in January was good but i do not know what to expect for the march april season.

    Thought about costa rica?

Should be lots of Sailfish, some days all you can catch & release.

    Yes.

The challenge is to find someone willing to travel as far as it takes, most boats won't bother going too far if there's something to catch closer to shore.

Ed Kunze is a local Fly Fishing guide who can tell you who's worth hiring to go after Tuna and who will give you a boat ride.Should be lots of Sailfish, some days all you can catch & release.

Zihua is a great place to party but not as high end as Cabo much smaller/not as much choice of bars.

As to the aforementioned Costa Rica-Mexico has much much better food and isn't so taken over by gringo-run sportfishing outfits.

I 2nd Ed Kunze for Zihue. info and for Tuna it is a crap shoot since it is way offshore and not the quarry focused on, on a side note the sailfishing in Mid Feb. can be epic but it also can be so-so but it is a great destination and I have been there at that time of year before and witnessed awesome fishing, the full moon REALLY throws the bite off and I recommend staying away from it if you want a chance at decent fishing, I have also caught blue marlin down there at that time but it is the exception not the rule most boats don't even fish for them so bring your own lures if you want a shot at one!!!PEACE

    HI Andree,

I have fished there several times and love it! Both months are the peak of there seasons there. The sailfishing can be great. There are tuna and some boats will do it. You have to pay extra for the longer run. I would recommenr Temo on the Secuestro De Amor, He can be reached at temosportfishing@yahoo.com.mx or you can try his cell 01152 755 557 8801. If he isn't available he should be able to put you with a good crew like the Llamarada. It is panga fishing, which is 2 people for boat and his one of the best!

Just try to stay in town and in Ixapa. There have been some issues with safety outside of town and on the road to Mexico City.

As for other places, I love were we are in Costa Rica it is the peak of our sailfish season. We can average 20+ shots a day, in one the most beautiful places on earth. But, the draw back is that it is a lot more expensive to fish where we are.
    Costa Rica's best sportfishing!
