It's been a while and a lot is going on- Free Spirit Report
July 19, 2005
I have to say that this season has really turned out to be hard to figure. I am sorry that I have been so long in making a report and I probably would not have thought of it except that Bob Smith called me and asked what was up. So, this one's for you , Bob! I have fished every day since the 1st except for the 8th when we were deluged by Mother nature. Up to the 10th, the Bluefins were unbelievable. In fact, on the 9th, John Baker had 26 all by himself! What a day! The next day we only managed 4 and that trolling bite for these fish has really died off as the water temp has climbed up to 79-80 degrees and the thermocline has dropped from 37 feet to 100 feet and the water from the beach to the canyons is about the same temp. We need a couple of days of a good breeze to mix this water and stabilize the whole syatem. anyway, There have been some white marlin and yellowfin tuna in the Wilmongton, as well as a few dolphin,( I refuse to call these great fish Mahis), and there have been a few Bluefins caught on the chunk. We had 1 about 80 lbs on Sunday the 17th. The fluking has been off and on but when it is on, it is great. Today Lee Novick flew in from San Francisco with his young son, Simon and we had 4 over 20" including one that was 24'! The sea bassing has slowed down but the weakfish are showing up on the beachfront, and the croakers are also starting to show so, I am really excited about the next few weeks. The inshore trolling for small blues has come alive and they are fun to catch on the light tackle and are very tasty according to all who have tried them. There have also been some King and Spanish Mackeral taken on the troll. Yep, this season is pretty darn good! I have a few dates open in August so give a call!
