    Isla Mujeres Sailfish Report

After one hell of a beginning to my week a trip to isla mujeres for an attack on some sailfish was just what I needed. I just got back and am still feeling pumped from the great action we had. Yesterday I woke up to calm winds and a good report of sailfish being caught the day before. We made our way down to the boat and met up with our crew on the Qualifier. Capt. Fin, our mates Dr. Dre and Mike were our host for the day. Our Crew consisted of Ethan Rhodes from the Business, Capt. Timmy Tribbitt from the Rock On, Capt Billy Hein from the Stacey, two good friends from Delaware, Jeff and Rick, and myself Capt Neil from the Sun Daze. Our goal for the day was to bag as many releases as possible and get some circle hook lessons from Capt Fin and Crew.

We made the short run to the fishing grounds and layed out the spread. Capt Fin gave us a good lesson on hooking these fish with the circles, which we quickly ignored and wiffed the first couple of fish. After a second good round of coaching from capt Fin Ethan had our first release of the day. As the day went on we got better at the circle hook thing and things started to click with us. We were getting the drop and slowly reel technique down and started to rack up some numbers on the fish. We found it is a fine line between a full backlash and a good clean hookup.

By the end of the day it was certain that Capt Fin had really put us on the fish. We had racked up 14 releases, and gotten some good circle hook lessons. The Qualifier is an awesome boat, with an incredible crew. If you find yourself in Isla in need of a charter definitely give these guys a call. We had a great much needed day of fishing. Thanks again to the Capt and Crew of the Qualifier.

Here are some photos of the day's action:

Neil thanks for posting the backlash picture I'm sure you guys will have fun with that.
It really wasn't a backlash I was just doing an experiment on the reel spools ability to spin faster than the line that is coming off of it. My conclusion as you can see in the picture is that the spool IS capable of going faster than the line.

I guess we both picked up a couple nicknames.

Hey #2GAFFMAN don't get me started on you.

Getting that backlash and still releasing the fish is impressive. I had a rookie crew with me last year and we called any lost fish due to backlash "Zing Pow". Zing Pow being the sound that the reel makes as the sailfish swims away and the angler scratches his head. We tried to order some Zing Pow Chicken that night for dinner, but couldn't find a Chinese restaurant.
