    Insane topwater bluefin...insane footage

Been absent the past month or so, been on the water every single day save for a few chasing these big bluefin around. The bite this year is the best in along, long time, and the fish are pushing 150 plus pounds on average. We have been targetting these brutes with spinning and jigging gear

    Here is some recent action:

    Nice footage !

I guess that's all pre-Bob swell, which seems to have quieted down the bite a bit out East.

Absolutely amazing, I have never seen bluefins busting like that. How long does a fight usually last on spinning tackle like that.

    Bluefin on top...

Great action fellas. What type of rods and reels are you using? I have no idea what the rods are, but I think I see Shimano Saragosa reels, is that correct? If so, what model? What lb test are you using. I'm looking into getting a reel to use for jigging and popping and the Saragosa keeps coming up as something that should be capable and affordable. Thanks for the information.

Depends on the angler, average time is 20-25 minutes, more for newbies and demon fish, and less for guys who have a few under their belts on the long rods and spinners. I have had fights as little as 6 minutes on triple digit fish this year.

I was using the saragosa s with no issues, but after 20-30 fightrs with triple digit tuna, it took its toll on them. Fine for the average guy, but when on charter every day ion the hands of various anglers, I was forced to switch up. I am looking into Van Staal right now, pretty impressed thus far.

I would suggest biting the bullet and spending the extra dough on a Stella or a Saltiga, tyou will get much better life out of it. If not encountering BIG tuna on a regular basis, no worries with the saragosa, just upgrade to the carbontex drags from Dawn at smooth drags. The saragosa are great reels for moderate use on pelagic fish for the money, but not bulletproof by anymeans.

The rods I use are OTI www.oceantackle.net they are awesome rods and very moderately priced for what you get.

65 pound suffix on my reels, 100 pound wind on leaders.

    Thanks...

Thanks for the information Captain Dom. I only get about 2 or 3 offshore trips in a year (off NJ). The Saragosa will probably be fine for me.

When is the best time to come up and get in on this topwater bluefin fishing? When do they fish first show up? When do the last one's go? Which locations are you fishing (how far from port)? I've always wanted to catch a tuna on a surface plug.
