School related... it has a very major impact on the economy and there are stats all over the internet about it. Boats, lures, tackle, captians/mates careers, science, tax dollars etc...

Great topic for your senior essay. I just finished my senior project on circle hooks (made an infomercial). Make sure in your paper you include how sportfishing has changed you as a person.

while this applies to florida and the red grouper commercial closure, it is an interesting look into the economic aspect of recreational fishing/sport fishing:

"The study was conducted by Brad Gentner, who ran the recreational economics data collection program for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for eight years before starting his own company, Gentner Consulting Group. His study found, among other things, recreational gag grouper fishing generates $107 million in value added [to the economy], $60.8 million in income, and supports 1,513 jobs; recreational red grouper fishing generates $35.2 million in value added, $20 million in income and supports 501 jobs."

Recently the Giant Bluefin Tuna season took place off NC. A paper about that would be very cool. Not one about the tuna but about the men that pursue them. Sure some do it for fun but most do it to feed their families, as that is their payday. It was an amazing story reading the stories from all the guys this year of the daily grind for days without even a bite. The determination of these guys and the impact on the local economy is incredible....then add in investment, all the permits and regulations it is easy to see how much these guys work for every dime....just a thought
