And while doing all of these things I have been a charter mate, and a rec fisherman. I went to school to become a Marine Biologist (though I didn't finish) not to end commercial fishing but to help. My brother was a commercial fisherman (one reason why I've done what I've done). I wanted to make it so he could make a great living as well as improve the fisheries as a whole.
One reason Longliners get a bad rap is there is more money is trying to stop them, CCA, Billfish foundation, Marine Fisheries etc. US commercial fisheries are so highly regulated- that you almost need a lawyer on the boat with you to let you know what you can and can't do. Here in NC proclamations come out almost everyday. What the guys have to go though to BE LEGAL is unreal. Permits, licenses, commercial vessel regulations etc. It's a dying breed not necessarily because of the fishing itself but all restrictions, some needed and some not.
Organizations that receive thousands to millions of dollars every year are the ones trying to shut down all commercial fisheries. There aren't looking at many factors more people on the coast, more boaters, more plants, cycles, more trash, pollution, disease, etc (I could go on for days). It's easy to just blame the commercial guys. What about you???(the recs) How many marlin were fought for hours just in one tourney???? Do you really believe after he's been fought for hours thrown up his stomach, had a heart attack he's going to live?? Sure he swims away from you but for how long.????
In NC the Marine Fisheries look at one fisheries and try to manage it for an example Rockfish- they aren't looking at what is effected by this (crabs, shrimp, oysters, clams) then they look at those and wonder why their numbers are down. So then another section of Marine Fisheries studies and regulates the crabs and never in their findings do they say it's cause the rockfish population is over crowded.
Commercial guys don't have support from any govt; we don't have any money to give.
If they don't exist what are you going to eat what are you going to use for bait?? With all that said I AM for conservation! but for the right stuff.
Unfortunately the only solution is for the two; biologist (who understand alot about how and why fish do what they do) needs to get with the fisherman (who spend everyday on the water and know what the stock really is) to get together and LISTEN to each other.
For anyone who makes a living (or tries to) from the water ROCK ON!!!
Keep em coming maybe some people will learn the truth!!!
