I need some help rigging a harpoon.

I bought a harpoon at the boat show Friday and I'm not sure what would be the best way to rig it. I will be using it in lieu of a flying gaff for swordfish.

    Thanks,

POON MAN That would be a good post for some of the rest of us. I have only used a harpoon on Halibut and it works sweet. I don't do it the same as the rest of the locals and they cringe when I tell them what I do.

I was trying to remember where the graphic i saw on how to rig a dart (its the same way i was taught) And then i remembered, its on poon man's website. He can explain it and take credit for his drawing. The only thing i do differently is rubber bands instead of tape but that's a personal preference and sharpen the dart until its like a razor blade then color the edges and tip so they won't rust. My buddy hit a swordfish for me a little bit ago and didn't know he'd gone through both gill plates, i like'em THAT sharp.

    Poon rigging instructions

    Rick,

Sorry for the delay, busy with the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show. The best way we have found to rig a POON is as follows-

    1. 5' Rigged dart (coated cable or 3 strand rope) with loop at end
    2. Mainline- 200-300 ft. 3/8" 3 strand rope in basket or milk crate
    3. 18" Poly ball at end of Mainline

Starting at the Rigged Dart, tie or use a loop-to-loop connection to the Mainline. Now that this connection is made, take the dart and attach it to the shank (most forward part of the harpoon), does not really attach just fits snugly over the shank.

We take a safety line clip and attach it to the end of the Poon (see picture below) using heavy mono. Take the Dart/Mainline combo run it down the length of the harpoon and through the clip.

Now, tape the Mainline to the Poon shaft using electrical tape in a spiraling motion (see picture). The tape is only used to keep the dart from falling of of the harpoon when facing down. This is why we use the spiral method it allows the Mainline to release from shaft once the harpoon hits a fish.

Using this method allows for a single line to used and still recover the harpoon. When the fish is hit they may run. The harpoon itself will come out of the fish and the dart will stay in. The harpoon will be attached to the Mainline by the clip. Once the fish is pulled in the harpoon can easily removed from the mainline by simply unclipping it from the main line.

I hope this helps yopu can PM myself or Chris with any other questions or post them

    Thanks,

    Kevin and Chris aka POONMAN

    rethink safety clip

leads to lost harpoons and possible injuries that can be circumvented. safety clip that is illustrated can open when clip gets wraped by fishing line. Bye, bye harpoon. Also, because the clip can open it can penetrate the hands. Leading to lost phalanges. Might also use a stopper knot on mainline to keep harpoon from sliding down towards fish and causing some other problem. I like using a stainless link that threads open. Now you're ready to be a starbuck. Good luck and stay safe, a hard thing to do with hundreds of lbs of angry fish that does not like getting tickled by your razor sharp harpoon.

    Poon Man,

Thanks for the tips. I have a couple of questions.

Do you always throw the harpoon ? Or can you just jouk em with it and throw the pole back in boat ?

And second have you ever used a shorter rope, say 50' with a float and hook another fishing rod to it via a long line clip ?
