As far as the problem of the dropback... I don't have much experience with the planer boards but have used the riggers a few times in the ocean in a slow bite and the key is to have someone by the rigger rods and if they go down crank like hell to get the slack out. If you do this you don't miss much but if you don't you will definitely lose a fair number of fish. If the fish are biting hard, don't usually need the riggers cuz we can catch a quick limit with 6 rods but if they are finicky and we throw the riggers out, the bites aren't as aggressive and you really need to make sure you crank that slack in to get a good hook set
