    How to trip a planer while trolling?

    Started using the inline bridled planer set-up this year on an 80W/bent butt combo. Works great, but I cannot get it to trip to reel it in to check the bait. Once stopped to clear lines it is still hard and never trips, and forget about it while trolling that bait is out until we stop the boat.

    I tried the drop back for 5 seconds method and all that does is let out more line, as soon as I reengage the reel, the planer resets and dives again.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Are you doing that at trolling speed or when you slow down. If it is when you slow down, do it a trolling speed. That is when I do the planer rod and the down rigger, works like a charm for me.

    I do not think you can, or at least I never have figured it out.

    I just bump into N for a moment and crank it in.

    I use #1, #2, & #3 for in-line set-ups.

    If your planer won't trip than it is usually one of 2 things;
    1) Your bridle is too short
    2) your drag is locked down too much to freespool

    1) Check your bridle length against the length of your planer and clips - If the distance between the loops is shorter than the combined length of the planer and clips, you won't be able to trip it with the freespool method.

    2) your reel needs to freespool so the line is running freely - if not, try backing down the drag slightly so that it will truly freespool.

    I'm using #24 and #36 and I try to trip it at trolling speed. The bridle is tournament cable and it is pretty long, at least 18" way longer then the planer. I think I might not have truly freespooled for fear of backlash, time to try again.

    lift your rod up high drop it super fast then up again. Might have to watch someone do it first. Works every time.

    The rod lift technique would be pretty darn tough with an 80 and a planer rod and is based on the same principles of the free spool.

    Check that you truely have freespool and drop the lever. It will look like it's gonna backlash at first, but will work itself out. Just keep your hands away from the loops.

    I have the same set up and it trips every time, but you have to freespool quickly. Slow doesn't work. I keep the clicker on and never had it backlash.
