    HOW MANY IS TOO MANY...........

when the fishing is hot and catching is easy? We all been there! The Mahi are coming through and catching them is like shootin fish in a barrel at times. We load up.....day after day after day! Fill the box, fill the cooler, fill the freezer........but can we really use all that meat?

And not to mention, the p-nuts........why keep when they are soooooo small? Im guilty too.

Accordiung to the NMFS and NOAA the Mahi stock is 33% ABOVE max sustainable levels, so even with all that has happened in the last few years they are bouncing back year after year. that and they only have a rough life span of 5-6 yrs max if not caught.

What does this translate into catch what you can use as normal and if you have a little more then share with friends that aren't as fortunate as your to recive the gift of coblat blue, yellow and green. Just play by the limits and all will remain good.

Just wondering one thing- when NMFS tells us stocks are in trouble we say that their science is flawed- should we believe them when they tell us the numbers are good? i don't know

i never understood killing limits of bailers unless there were six people in the party that were either not related to one another, or not a super tight group. 10 fish per man is not bad unless the only people they could share with also caught 10 fish that day.

The one I really don't understand is the need to try and kill 3 50 pound yft per man (when they are around to kill) I think that really leads to a fair amount of waste and tossed out freezer burnt fish.

Now I know that some people make use of every last fish they catch, but there are far more that say things like "i scheduled this trip just right- i just threw out the last of the fish in the freezer from last year..."

Every day is different, but I think for most groups 2 yft per man and a total 30 to 40 bailers is plenty.

Only take what you are going to eat or share with family and friends. Nuff said.

As long as you do not waste it, then I see no harm in taking your limit even if I don't. I often keep just enough to share & will split up all but just a couple meals to eat while fresh and a couple packs for the freezer. I've found that stockpiling in the freezer often leads to big quantities of things going bad at the same time, which in turn, will often lead to total waste. I've been raising cattle, hogs, chickens as well as shrimping and fishing to provide the majority of my family's food for a few years now and the same lesson applies to everything...

    Be Responsible.

the way I see it, there are seasons for a multitude of species all through the year. with a modest take over a wide range of food sources, while only freezing just enough to make it through till the next trip, whether it be fishing, hunting, or to the slaughter house lessons my impact on any one food source to a minimum and promotes almost zero waste. It might not matter in the big picture, but I'm going try to leave as little footprint as possible when I'm gone from this good ol' earth.

I agree with what is said to an extent...for instance on one of the last private boats I fished on we caught 10 or so gaffers very quickly an decided that was enough for us and pushed offshore looking for billfish. However, if you're a paying customer on a charter and you want your limit of dolphin....well have at it!

I'll second that. Also, I only keep what I feel like cleaning. Carving up 30 dorado is a PITA!
