How do you fish this kind of lure?

We're going to some deep floaters (oil rigs 135 miles out) in a couple weeks, where we will be targeting Yellowfin in 600-800 fathoms. I'm taking a standup 50-W with 80lb mono, a 113H with 80lb braid, and an 850SS with 65lb braid.

This lure was a prize in a grab bag, at a tournament banquet. It's a Williamson Abyss Speed Jig, 10 inches long and 14 ounces. It appears to have three choices of places to connect the leader. Can anyone advise me on how these lures are supposed to be fished, and why it has three very different places to attach to it? I'm guessing the best rod to use is the 113H. Any ideas, or should I leave this lure home?

I saw that jig being used on an advertisement at Tackle Unlimited the guys only used it on jigging snapper they connected the swivel on the same eye as the hook. The advertisement didnt show trolling it, tho it looks to be a high speed lure and dive deep if you connected the swivel to the center of the lure.

I would tie direct to the front and drop to where the bait is and jig the tuna will most likly if not all the time hit the jig as its falling, when you use the braid (which is recomended) back off on the drag a little just because there isnt any line strech and you might have a lost hookup. run a nice topshot or a leader of flouro. if you have the monster roller guides then tie a small spro swivel and about 15 feet of floro (just make sure the swivel can go through the guides with ease) the 15 feet is so you can crank the swivel onto the spool and not worry about it after its on the reel. you can go a little longer also.
with that jig I would try all three spots to tie off to just to see what the action is and to play around a little.

that is a big lure..we usually use a little smaller lure around here..NJ coast..and without the mid hook point, for rigging you can use a floro leader, and then. short shank live bait type tuna hook on a loop of heavy cord, that gets attached to a solid ring with a loop to loop connection. the jig goes on the same solid ring with a split ring. Your running line is then tied to the same solid ring. That way you pull on the fish through the solid ring. The jig and the split ring don't get any load. thats one way to rig it..i posted a pic of how to do the Hook in the pic section.....Important... dont set the drag to tight, fat end down..

Thanks paul708. Where's the "pic section"?

What do you mean by "drag too tight, fat end down"?

    A big help... I found this: http://shimanofishing.com/publish/co...utterfly0.html

the hook is on the "thin end".. alot of fish are lost because the drag is set to tight..use a lighter drag than normal..till you get used to it..

    REEL WAKE
You need a fairly light(in weight not strength) rod and a high speed retrieve reel(lightweight also). The shimano Torium, as I've said before, is my reel of choice taking price/functionality into consideration. Spool it wit 65# power pro, it will hold a bunch of it. Get a fast action rod. I like the Tallus 7' 17-30# rod by Shimano. A heavy rod and reel combo will take a lot of the fun out of the high speed jigging technique.

There is a great video of Captain Brian Harrington laying the law down with a vertical jig somewhere on this site. Someone help me with the link please...Jer? Flatbottom? Admin? Box? I know one of you can find the link for us...

I have a couple of the jigs you have and I do not care for the hook rig it comes with. One more split ring needs to be added to the top and two hooks should go on the intermediate ring. The Gamagatsu assist hooks are nice, so are the owners...don't see nothin wrong with the one paul708 posted a pick of either. I like the flexible cord going to the hook better than the stiff rig. As far as fishing the bait...drop it to the bottom and then try to get it back to the top as fast as you can reel while pumping the rod up and down. See why I say light weight rod. Mix your retrieve speed up a bit and try to keep track of about how much line is out when you get bit. There are many on this board very qualified to help...STEP UP AND HELP THE MAN OUT! Holwachagot

    jiggin

that size i use for big tuna if you dont have any liveys, drop it down 200ft in front of a porpoise school and wind like hell.

use a smaller size for inshore fishing, the problem i have found is that this hook system hooks the fish in the side of the head and can lead to long ugly fights.

    good luck mike
