The theory behind the barb on the outside is to keep the hooks from hanging up on themselves and the line. No better at staying in a fish lip, no worse either. I like the hook you speak of Flat. Holwachagot.

the abyss jigs kill the ajs. The 113 would be fine will it with 65 lb braid.Find some structure drop it straight down, then whip it up getting the line to make a snaping sound do this simultaneous with turning a half crank to full crank at a time.
Deep Water Jigging is very popular here in Australia.

Shows a few pics at the top of the page of the fish we catch here on them. You will notice there is a marlin on one of the shots. YEP.. a 400Gramme sucker nailed that on one of the bigger reefs we have here in 50 fathoms.
The video shown is about right on how to get them to work.
Its a very physical type of fishing requiring TOUGH tackle !!!
The brands that sell well here are...
Shimano T-Curve Jigging Rods
Shimano Trinidad reels
And the reel that everyone wants.. is a BLUE HEAVEN, from Japan. It weighs nothing but you can put over 40lb of drag straight off the reel. We all use Braid here - preferebly 80-100lb and its multicoloured changing colours every 30 feet so we can tell the depth we are at matching the sounder markers.
Its great fun to be locked up to a giant Kingfish on this sort of tackle.
The Chiropractors LOVE IT !!!
Cheers

tagnbrag. those BLUEHEAVEN reels are a nice piece of work, i would have been using them but when i was looking at them the were having a little problem with the drags or something i am not sure..i think the problem was fixed, but i just moved on to the Ocea Jiggers..and the Jigging master rods (and blanks) which i have here for the guys. i was hoping to get the tunamax blanks. (still may happen)..also the NEW lami jigging blank is avil by special order..the 6680 seems nice. i hope to get that built for someone to try.,,..do you guys get the shimano Blue rose over there? i just saw the pic of a broken one. clean break. i didnt hear the story of how it broke yet. i did have some DVD,s of the AJ guys ( i think) i was trying to get put up here..that yellow tail jigging dvd is awesome

Once again, I asked "what time is it" and you guys told me how to build a watch. Thanks for the education on jigging.
Box... Great video!
Now I have an uncontrollable urge to spend some more money. I can't wait to try it.
good luck, you should do well with it. if the fish are there you should be able to catch them on a jig. just make sure you are at the right depth.
How do you do that when you're dropping in 600 fathoms? Is there some kind of "rule of thumb" thats says these jigs fall through the water column at so many feet per second? If I knew that, I could just do 1000-counts until I'm more or less at the right depth.Originally Posted by paul708
I presume "the right depth" is just below where the fish are showing up on the sounder?
