Horse Ballyhoo Rigging Technique Video

This is a very interesting way to rig a Horse Ballyhoo. Perfect for the Carolina Giant Tuna guys this winter.

i don't think double hooked bally's swim nearly as well. Plus, when their mouth is the size of a basketball, I don't think they are going to have any trouble engulfing the whole bait.

I watched the video too, and am probably going to try it next summer with wahoo to try and cut down on my short strikes.

I would have to agree that a double hooked ballyhoo doesn't swim nearly as natural compared to a single hooked ballyhoo. Plus we have a hard enough time trying to get a GBFT to bite our bait as it is with one hook, it seems like the tunas would see the second hook a shy away from it. The real advantage that I see with this double hoooked ballyhoo would be for a large ballyhoo on the planer rod when wahoo fishing.

I think the real problem is the lack of GBT these days. I have caught them back 10-12 years ago using 300 lb regular mono leaders and caught up to 3 fish before 9:00 am and we never slow trolled or anything like we do now. We even caught well on old soft select size ballyhoo that we had left over when we ran out of horse's do to king bite offs plus the selects were cheaper and since it was almost all tag and release it did not matter all that much.

I tried using a double hook stinger rig with a short shot of cable a few times to try and catch a Mako while GBT trolling and we did catch a few GBT using this rig. Would I ever use a double hook rig these days for GBT and the answer would be no but I also would not troll at 6.2-6.7 knots and use 300 lb mono leaders. I will use some of these double hook rigs next summer for the smaller BFT and Yellowfin if they ever show up in our area to help prevent all the Wahoo bite offs when trolling.

We often have our lines in before the sun comes up in low light conditions when GBT trolling and I might just try a double hook rig as there is no way the tuna is going to see the second hook or the leader and we use 220-280 lb leaders prior to daybreak on all our rigs before scaling down to 180-200 floro leaders once the sun comes up and the boat traffic increases. I have had GBT chew thru 200 lb leader before when we only fished 36 lbs of drag and the fight was extended plus we switched away from the stainless 7691 Southern Style Tuna hooks as we had a few open up on us on big fish when we started using more drag. We still use the DT model 7691 on occasion but mostly the stronger 4X ones these days since we fish at least 42 lbs of drag or more.
