    hook size

I'm new to mako fishing and was wondering what size and type of hooks should be used.I fish out of ocean city nad believe the average size would be between 150-250 lbs and I would think a hook in the 10/0 range would be good. any advice?

We use the big hooks also! You have to so that they will pull thru the baits when the big girl come in for dinner!

I use a Mustad 7691DT 10/0 for most cut baits and a 7691S 12/0 for big dead baits.

I would use an open bite hook for a live or dead bait--7731D or 7754D. match the size of the hook to the size of the bait. generally, IF I were mako fishing, I would be using 9/0--12/0 hooks for baits to match....i.e. a whole boston mack would be rigged on a 9/0 hook. medium bluefish fillet on a 10/0, larger bluefish fillet on 11/0 & a whole bluefish on a 11/0 or 12/0.

When you rig your fillet, cut the thickness out of it some, so that the hook point is well clear of the meat. IF you use a whole fish (bluefish, boston mack), you can rig it like it were alive, bridled thru the eyes. or, here's another nice little bit of rigging, easy too.
twist a 12"-18" length of smaller wire (#7) onto the bite of your bait hook. then twist onto the end of that length of wire, a #4 live bait hook (rather small hook). the distance between the bottom of the bite in the bait hook & the eye of the #4 live bait hook should be only about 2-3 inches. You now definitely need to fish the fish when you get a bite, but very effective & a clean hook-up.

It depends on the size of the bait but 10/0 is right for that size fish with a fillet bait or whole mack. You could go down to 9/0. For whole bluefish I like 12/0. I like the 7699 I believe is the hook from mustad. It is offset.
