We cleared LEI at about 4:30 pm Sat. Later than we wanted. It was blowing hard out of the SE. We were nervous about this but were greeted with a calm inlet and ocean. Lulled us into a false sense of well-being. It gradually kicked up. Not bad. Then about 10 mi from the edge as the sunset...it worked into a nice 3-4 sometimes 3-5 shorter than they forecasted swell/chop.
Pulled up on the tip of the Carteret and dropped the hook in 600'. We settled down into 570' or so. Bait was minimal but there. Night was quiet. Around 12:30 am we got bit off on the deep bait. We're thinking Wahoo or shark. It wasn't a fun night. It wasn't "rough" but it was not pleasant. It blew 13-15kt. out of the SE all night. Some boats with 10' on us claimed to only make 21 kts (we made 20 kts.) on the way out.
I gave up the ghost around 230am to take a nap. I awoke to a sodium halide light blaring into our cockpit and my father screaming various "pleasantries". Some piece of sh*t lobsterman was circling us. Within a stones throw, none the less. Apparently he couldn't find his gear, which he assumed we tied off to. While everyone else tied up...we took the time to set out our 1800' feet of rode. His pot that he was looking for was no more than 1/8 mi away. F**king numbnuts. He did this for about 45 min. Real nice...
As we were reeling in the lines to pull the hook we caught and released a small rat yellow.
Hopped on the troll in the AM and got the hell out of dodge (nothing there). We worked up the line and the billfish came a knocking. Whitey was all over our flatlines with bally/ilander combos. We played with 3 of them that didn't come tight. Lots of fun but we were looking for Tuna. Then the Blue One came calling. He committed suicide on the left flat. Came up immediately shaking his head right at the boat. Turned burnt off 100 yds. of line. Then came back with the demon in his eyes charging the boat. Took off no more than 10 yds. off out stern (thank god), cleared the water, and threw the hook.
Worked our way into some pretty looking water with loads of birds, slick, and the smell of a feed heavy in the air. We hooked up 2 LFT's and another rat yellow that got tossed back. LFT's took a Sterling Tackle Splasher Machine Bar. Shook the skunk off. Worked the area some more. Right flat had a wee little head pop up behind it. I yelled "Look out!". Left flat gets bit and a nice little wahoo comes to the boat (40" or so?). Worked the area a little while longer and nada. Started trolling in, cleaning, making our way home. Edge of the 50 a small mako comes up on our WWWB misses the hook. Pulled up at the end of the 50 and ran home with the seas to our back (thank God).
