HOME MADE GREEN STICK SUPER BIRDS

Well, this past spring, I got bored and busy all at the same time.

I didn't want to buy a bird for my new green stick so I thought that i could build a better mouse trap. Go to this link and view the slide show of my build-out of my new Super birds.

I used them this season and already lost one to a big hungry aggressive MAKO!

So now I only have one...but...let me know what you think???

    Slide Show Link Here: http://picasaweb.google.com/martyl.m...RBIRDBUILDPIXS

Tightlines and I can't wait to go fishing again! Marty

They look good. Do you have a greenstick on your boat?

Yes, as you can see in the early video I had originally put them on two heavy heavy rods glued into a bolt-on rod holder. But the pressure broke them. I went out and bought a greenstick and it was the right thing to do. I have my bird on 700# Kevlar spearfishing line on a Shimano 50 which is bolted to one of my grab rails and use it to reel the bird in and out.

What I didn't mention was that they only cost me to make the two birds $300.00 for the wood, foam, epoxy, polyester, fiberglass, rattle traps and spray paint and wings and around 12-hours in my shop with Cody building them.

Canyon Runner actually caught a mako because he uses a 16/0 hooks bolted to theirs and have it on a 130# outfit with 700# mono to reel the fish in. I use the kite clips and one squid in front of mine since it is way too much troble with two or more squids in front on the clips (they tangle a lot).

I have some better video of the squids jumping in front of the birds if I can find it, I will post it later.

Its weird, I wasn't going to post this idea, but my 25-years years of being a striper surf fisherman, and being super secrective are over. Its so hard to fish the Edge since there is so much territory to cover and since we are like a little itty, bitty, DOT on the big pond, I thought I would share my idea... Marty

Nice... pretty cool project. Now, lets see a video with something busting skyward!!!

Also, are you pulling this off the green stick with lines/baits between it and the boat? I have never seen a "greenstick" in action (isn't it the tall "rigger" coming straight up like a mast?) Sorry for the rookie question, but we don't see too many sticks in the gulf.

    Nice work!

Yes, I bought my Greenstick and squids from ALL Tackle, nice guys. I have a 100' 500# Mono leader with a couple of kite outrigger clips on it spread about 50' apart from each other, then I made different length squid leaders with weighted 12" Rasta Squids. I found that running only one squid is the easiest and that I clip the actual loop from the squid's leader (with chaffing tubing on the loop) into the clip and crank it down as tight as I can get it. THis way it won't get pulled out when bouncing in and out of the waves, plus it sets the hook well too.

WHen the fish hits and the clip releases it is then on a regular atandup outfit and the fight is on. I don't use it like the commercial guys, where the 10-15 swuids are clipped to the mainline and attached to the breakaway line from the stick and cranked in on a hydralic reel. That's not sport fishing to me.

Some may say this is cheating, but I gotta tell you...it aint easy to use. There are lots of other issues to deal with as you try to reel it in to reset or just take in. LOTS! Like I said before, I only use it now when the bite is real hard or other stick boats have turned the bite off to sporties.

What is very true about the dangers of setting up a greenstick is the mounting of it. THe pressure it put on the mounting hardware is HUGE!!!!!!!!!!

I am lucky, I bolted a aluminum welded tube and flange to my metal roof and ran the stick up through my metal tower which supports it just fine. But when you see it doubled over while under way WOW! I can just see it ripping through most fiberglass boats with the owner screaming in horror!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god! my BOAT.... Why the F$%K did I put this thing on my boat for!!!!

THink twice before going for the expense and heart ache.

I found the section of video with us trolling the giant super bird with a decent shot of the jumping squid in front of the bird, it right around the middle of the short 2-minute video clip. The clip does show how well the entire spread looks with the bird chasing it. I think the splashing and rattling from the giant bird behind the spread helps the spread. Take a look...what do you think?

go to here for clip: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...arch&plindex=9

I have been running a 16-oz. Barta Bigeye Jig in front of the suid behind the spreader bars. Check it out. Marty

Boy that thing throws up some water! It must look really good behind the boat. Do you ever run it inshore for bft or is it just a canyon thing?
