    HIGH SPEED WAHOO BITE

Got my first high speed wahoo bite yesterday on the way out to go bottom fishing for tilefish. Thanks to Wahoo king for all their info and to Johnny Walker at Melton Tackle. I met Johnny at the Pirates Cove Billfish Tourney and talked with him about the high speed trolling. He sold me a lure that he said was the one to use. Sure enuff, it got hit.
It looked to be around 50 to 60 lbs and we lost it when the anglers did a switch in the chair. Anyhow it was really exciting to get a bite at 18 knots and we'll keep her tight next time! This is my first experience at high speed trolling and I would recommend to all that want to catch wahoos!

If you don't mind, what was the bait he recomended for Hi Speed trolling. I fished with Adrian on the Sea Striker out of MHC years back and he pulled some lures on the run in, said he caught a lot of wahoo doing it. Would like to have a few on board to pull when the hoo's are off Va. Thanks

People troll that fast for Wahoo's all the time.

I have done it plenty of times here in NC.

The faster it goes the better the Wahoo's like it. Does not matter where your at in the world. Wahoo's like baits moving faster. Its a proven fact.

Glad it worked out for you Captain Ron. You will get him next time.

It was a green and black with a gold sparkle head made by Wahoo King. I think you can only get it through Melton. I usually run two lures and two different colors one at around 120 ft back and the other a little longer. I'm new at this, so others may have some better ideas. Most boats in this area are much faster than I am so it doesn't fit in their scheme as well as it does for me. I'm a 20 knot at cruise boat.

John showed us how to do it a few years ago during the wahoo tournament with marauder baits. Pretty cool. Couldn't get a ballyhoo bite, switched over and got three.

    Thanks Capt. Ron

Glad you got bit, sometimes you need to put the HURT on the angler and keep the boat moving forward at a good clip all the way to gaff or wiring him thru the door

Here's the Ace Wahoo King Lures, GOLD head ones are a Melton Exclusive!

    Too Fast?

    Johnny,

What would be a max speed for pulling lures for wahoo. I know they are a fast. 18 -20 knots is an odd speed for my boat but we regularly run in the 22 knot range. Just toying with the idea. Sounds good to be fishing during alot of that run out. Fishing out of OI there is alot of good water between the 100 fathom and the inlet.

Rare but I heard that one of the inshore boats caught a wahoo just off the beach a few months ago.

    Speed

I would say the faster you want to go the more weight you will need to run in front of the Wahoo King, but the lure itself will run/track at 22 knots+ IMO

You may need to put a 3-4 lb in-line lead and shock leader in front of her at that speed to keep her down also and move her back some in your spread, the issue now will become your rod/reel set-up.

The best set-up is on a bent butt right off the tip, going to need to go with a 80 class reels at this speed IMO..
