High speed trolling tips for a single troller

    Hello,

Occasionally, I go out on a head boat (OBX) that allows high speed trolling. I have a two speed reel, a trolling rod and a few high speed lures (with wire leader). My question is, if the lure is running sub surface. How can you tell how much line is out? When only one person is trolling is there an ideal distance? I went out for the first time on Friday. I got a hit, but didn't hook up.
Thanks in advance, I'm sorry if I have posted this in the wrong forum.

    Hey Anthony,

It would be nice if you gave a small intro. about yourself. Like where you fish, type of fishing you like etc. It will help everyone to get to know you and help answer your questions.

Don't feel bad I didn't know to do that either.

To answer your question: Use one of the lures design for high speed trolling, Wahoo King (a SFC member) makes some awesome lures. Also do a search on SFC, there is several threads about high speed trolling. After you get the proper setup, try to run your lure in clean water (beyond the prop wash).
It really doesn't matter if it 150' or 300' back, if it is in clean water it will get ate. To tell how far back your lure is running you can floss a small section on your main line about every 100', use something like a small piece of dacron tied on with with a uni knot and a touch of Zap A Gap to hold it in place.

Pardon my rudeness, I generally surf fish in the OBX. With all of the beach closures,I'm hitting the boat more
Most of my trolling will take place in the OBX. I'd like to get a Wahoo or two. I currently have a Tyrnos 30 II and about 6 lures, all rigged with wire. Most of the post that I saw were about multiple rigs.

    Thanks,

    Anthony

Id use the same type of lures if you were trolling multiple baits but just troll 1. I would fish it about 100 yards back if it were me... but you can always adjust this throughout the day...

You must be fishing in Hatteras....anyhow as was said earlier go to Wahoo Kings site.....He's the man when it comes to this kind of fishing..I love fishing high speed. the hits are awesome and exciting. I think a 30 is way to light ( my opinion) good luck and if your up my way look us up and I'll show you what we use.

I agree as well a 30 is probably a little light...

Are you fishing off the bird watching boat?

Yes I am going out of Hatteras. I am going out on a party boat that goes out to the gulf. But you are allowed to high speed troll. They tell you when to drop your lures (no birds). I will probably only troll 3 to 4 times a year. Is it too light for occasional use or for full time use? One of my friends has a Shimano TLD which is equivalent size as my Tyrnos 30. For someone who will only troll 3 or 4 times a year what would you all recommend?

    Thanks

    Love da name...

Mark your lines as Rarhomes said...Ideal distance would be greater than 100'

I could help you out with some pointers however, I need to know a couple of things.

How fast is the head boat traveling?
What type of lures are you running?
    Are you using trolling sinkers?
Braid or mono on your main line?
Can you explain in detail your entire rig (swivels included)?

Are you fishing on the Miss Hatteras? If so Capt. Spurgeon should have some 80's already rigged up for high spead trolling. IMO a 30 is to small. By the time you tell the Capt. you have a fish you might be spooled. You could try trolling from the bridge so your closer to the Capt.

The few times that I have done it we used very heavy lures and very heavy trolling sinkers. One bait was just outside of the propwash and the other was wwb. Half of a 80.

Hey fishskip does Kyle still own the Restless?

Tsujiki yes I was on the Miss Hatteras.

WahooKing here is my setup: my lure was a C&H Wahoo Wacker rigged with 5 feet of 49 strand leader(loop at end). I attach my 25 feet shock (250lbs mono) with a barrel swivel. The other end of the shock has a loop. I attach the loop end of the shock to the barrel swivel on the end of my trolling sinker (36 or 48 oz). The front of the trolling sinker has a loop. I have a barrel swivel attached to 100lb mono which is connected to 80lb braid via a bimini twist. I have between 1000 and 1200 yards of 80lb test braid on my Tyrnos 30II. I hope that answers your question if you need more info please let me know. I guess the boat was moving about 15 knots (maybe more).
I did get a hit, evidently the hook wasn't set and he got away.
