    Andrew,
i don't have all reel models and sizes and their capacities in my lil head,
but a shimano tyrnos 30 should have around a 30lbs drag and hold around 550yards of 30lbs mono, how you get that 1200 yards of 80lbs tested on?
basically i would say that tyrno 30II is too small for that high speed trolling, you should bring yur lure far beyond the 100' mark and to get hit by a nice wahoo on 15+knots speed which of course will take your bait when hooked right away way down towards the bottom may bring you in trouble by line quantity before that boat stops, on 30lbs drag a nice wahoo will take you a bunch of line away.
i am not highspeed trolling myself, my wahoo catches are the ones i get as sidecatches when trolling for Billies or throu mahi schools on lower speeds, but man, they strike on 50+ striking speed and take your bait down on a lil 30.
i would take a 50 reel with a 70 or 80lbs line on so the amount of line would be fine due to the higher drag available to stop the beast.
what is recommended by the Wahoo master on such speed to go single lined for a good sized wahoo?
good luck on your next trip

    Mike,

I'm running braid not mono. I use braid to increase line capacity.

    got me.
if you get 1000+ yards of 80lbs test on i would guess the reel even with just 30lbs drag should be fine for what ever strikes on that speed. i use monos only, so that's out of my world Andrew.

If your drags are already sticking on the high speed troll, you just might pull it off...Question is how long will the drags last after a couple of long runs...I've done it with 30's and caught fish...however, I've seen 30's blow up too...Anyhoo, I would shorten the lure leader length 1' so your total length is 4'...Also, I would go lighter on the trolling sinker say 1-2lbs...Drags should be set just beyond the point where your line is not creeping off the reel.

I can not stress the importance of setting the hooks back per lure on the high speed troll...Wahoo attack tail end first on the high speed troll...

If you are using one or two hooks on your hook rig, you want the bottom hooks point to touch the skirts end...this will eliminate any short strikes you might have...I set my hooks back on my lures by adding beads between the lure and hook rig...You can get the beads at any craft store.

Hope that helps...Feel free to contact me.

Quick question for you Wahoo King, I have got two 50
50WLRSA tiagra spooled with strait 50 mono. Using your lures and same leader and weight would it be find on these 50s. I would like to high speed just on the way out to the fishing grounds, the boat cruises at about 22-26 knots is this way to fast to pull lures???

I would load the 50's w/ 80# mono...or go for the braid...Your drags should hold more better...Your speed might need to be fine tuned but I don't see a problem in the low 20 kt. range....It will be easier to accomplish the high speed troll with bent butts...the pressure is off your rod's tip and on the spool...but it still can be done with straight butts.

So a true 20kt cruise is not too fast to set out a high speed rig. Cool...thank you for the feedback!
    Tight lines,
