This was quite probably the prettiest day I have seen in the last three months and it was back off the pilings we went. Yesterday was about bending the rod which we did on the kings. Today though was about ramping up the blood pressure and pulse rate by dragging big stuff out deep.
Odds are never great that you will score on a big blue off Palm Beach so expecting and hope are two different things. We slid the spread into the wash at 500' and let er rip... I ran a couple covered selects on the riggers. Macks on the insides. A Canyongear hoo machine down the shotgun. A large split tail took one flat and I just had to run a 3 1/2 inch day saver on the other.
As the name would indicate the day saver got hammered and our spool dumped. The straight down run let us know it was no billfish. It had all the spunk of a large yellowfin but alas it was one of those slob skippies we get down here.
Back on the troll in the nicest gentle swell and equally gentle breeze I have seen this season. We had the place to our selves. I set the aoutpilot and joined the boss and his guest in the pit for the wonderful drag.
Our guest was first to see it. Remembering the kings skyrocketing baits yesterday that was the first word out of his mouth. Only one problem with his call though. This fish was pushin a hundred pounds and had a spike on the end of it. I won't call a specie as its dorsal was down but either a slob monster sail, white or small blue was free floppin two hundred yards off our port stern.
I circled back but nothing raised. a short time later something slapped and tickled the big split tail. I was looking right there but never saw what it was. We kept eyes in the spread and a couple minutes later a skinny bill came swinging on the left riger. Knocked the bait down then did the same to the right side. Again I can't call a species for sure. I'm thinking a white as I did not see the characteristic purple of a sail or blue...
That would prove to be extent of our action for this beautiful day. Hard to call it a zero when you had a great time. I think I'll give it a "tween".![]()
