    Heavy Snap Swivels..Pros Cons Discussion

Over the years we have used many types of snap swivels. I thought this may be an interesting tho simple thread that may save someone a big fish. Im sure all of us has had a snap open up on a big fish. Occuring either by not closing it when the bait was deployed or opening under pressure. Fire away. Here are photos of heavy duty swivels from around the world. Let's keep this to 50lb tackle and up. Each photo shows a snap in some way diffrent from the rest..from the ball bearing swivel component to the wire.

I like #2 and #12. #2 is cool lookin, never seen that before. #12 looks strong as hell.

I have used #9 for years in the pacific on cow yellowfin and never saw one fail.

    swivels

    Great topic.

For my 50 lb. gear, spooled with 100 lb. power pro, I have been using the Momoi 150 lb.double ring snap swivel for a couple of years now after trying many brands and designs. They are designed like the snaps in photo #8. I have had zero problems with them after many fish of varying species and sizes. Definately happy with them and they will continue to be my swivel of choice.

As for heavy tackle (80's and 130's) I will only use double ring ball bearing swivels with NO snap. I crimp the leader connection directly to the swivel. This totally eliminates the chance of your snap opening. Eliminating the snap also provides a safety factor when wiring big fish...should the leader slip while you are wrapped up there is no protruding piece of metal sliding across your palm to slice your hand open.

This is just my preference, but no matter what brand you decide to use, make sure that the swivels are double ringed. They will not bind and break like a single ring. Very important.

The escape proof snaps suck. They arn't so "escape proof"

We keep it simple. #8 (those are sampo's i beleave) in 400-500 pound on the spreader bars we run.

#3 and #8 are similar to what I use. Have not have a snap failure yet, hopefully as long as i use quality snaps we wont have one.

I think were made by sampo and were under tension so you had to squeeze the chit out of them but they never failed. They were light and we used them on kite leaders.
