    Heat shrink tubing

Someone suggested in my post about chaff gear that I us heat shrink tubing, how does the heat effect the strenght of the mono or fluro, and what is the best method of applying the heat?

I don't normally put chafe gear on mono or fluoro rigs - if I do it is only foe heavy rigs and I will use some very small tubing - but I don't like heating mono or fluoro...

If I am using cable for a marlin lure, I usually cover the cable with heatshrink and use a heatgun to shrink the tube - that makes a good stiffener.

A lighter will work, but you have to be careful not to burn spots into the heatshrink.

Off the Hook has some Chaffe gear in a tube that works nice. Not sure the brand but I did look at it in detail the one day. Seem like nice stuff.

using shrink tube for chafe gear

When using it for mono you should shrink it down before you up it on your mono. Then it is just like using tackle tube style chafe gear. The hard part is not knowing what size you will need to buy in order to get have the right size after it is strunk (as different brands tend to shrink at smaller ratios). It is just trail and error to find the right one then just buy a bunch of it.

I use Chafe Gear on the mono for at least the first inch above the hook, depending on how big the lure is. If you wind up in a long battle with a large yellow or Bigeye, could make the difference between a fish in the boat, or a fish story at the dock. I bought the Chafe Gear from John at Trophy Tackle in Deer park, NY . Its actually called "Chafe Gear" and it's in tubes like you spoke of. He has a website too www.tunafishtackle.com , really nice guy too. Canyon Runner sells it also
