Heading down to Lauderdale - no Wife - no Kids

Heading down to Lauderdale and fishing on the 11th – dropping the boat in at Alsdorf Park in Pompano.

First timer in this neck on my own boat – looking for sails, any suggestions?

Is everyone Kite fishing or are you trolling any?

What kind of live bait are you using?

Any other suggestions for a newbie to Florida???

    Thanks for the help!!!

using pilchards and goggle eyes when i was in miami..

we trolled live bait and also kite fished..

got 2 sails on the kite and had like 6 more come up in the chummers eating like machines but they never bit a bait!!

they slow troll the goggle and have good success!!

you can also troll ballyhoo if you want...

i prefer kite fishing when i go down there and charter a boat.. i find it has worked a lot better than most other kinds of fishing.. but that is just from my personal experiences down there fishing out of miami on the l and h where they prefer kites if they can get em in the air.

but i also saw something strange while i was down there and question our captain and he said some guys use baloons like shark fishing to get their baits out further when drifting without a kite..

    Best Catch
    18 lb.Brown on fly: 6x tippet, 106 lb.Atl.Sail: Ft.Laud, 888 lb. Mako Cozumel, 950+ Blues St.T

    Pompano

    1) Hillsboro Inlet can be tricky...follow someone out...esp. on any North wind situation. Bridge has low clearance too and the current can be rippin'.

2)Bait....fishing with live ballyhoo is kinda the local "thing"...or used to be anyhow. You can't beat the 2 kite deal unless there's too much wind (can't hardly happen) or too little wind (helium baloons behind SFE kite).
Catchin ballyhoos...Pompano pier is a half mile south of inlet...u can go there (not too close or you'll have some sinkers hurled in your direction) and anchor where boat may fall back to some darker bottom...25-35 feet deep. Chum and toss some oatmeal occasionally, not the quick oats either, regular type. Ballyhoo bait hooks....long shank size 10-12...bait tiny squid strips or pieces of tentacles. Beware or leather jacks...their reverse spines will leave an impression you'll never forget...google them maybe for description(??)

3)Fish 3-5 ballys on 40-80lb mono...the rougher the higher you can go with leader....calmer the lighter u go.
14 foot leader with circle or mustad 9174 or 9175 6/0....take a piece of bally nose wire (copper) bite or cut in half and secure one end to eye of hook....slip hook in & out mouth or hard spot in front and lightly but firmly, wire hook shank to bill and cast away.....hard to beat the sight of sails on live ballyhoos.
Fish lighter tackle 12-20 lb max.
    4) No baloons unless you're drifting and even then not too desirable...kind of a rookie thing...imo. Turtles will try and eat them sometimes too so another strike against them.
    5) Local VHF = 72 i think. Live bait can be bought too....ck on vhf as well. Make sure u have an adaquate live bait well. 60-80 per doz....there's a sewer hole that is intermitant in about 90-110 feet of water just north of the inlet and the kings and sails frequent it...when it's on anyhow...lovely huh?!?
Sail usually in 90- 130 feet of water with exceptions to 60-400...but 100-120 is common...look for the color changes.
    6) Lots of artificial reefs off the pompano pier too and the adjacent blue water tank...their ranges can be googled I'd bet.
They start in 140-220 feet and are all scattered about...google pompano artifical reefs and see what u find.
    7) there's a church steeple 4 miles (+/-) south of the pompano fishing pier and that too is a local hotspot...u can't miss it. It's north of commercial blvd and south of atlantic blvd.
