I have seen that before and it was in the back of my mind a few years ago when i swam with a mother and her calf...but this one was small about 400 pounds and not to coherent. As a photographer i found it verry hard to belive the husband held the camera so still as his wife was dragged 40 feet down, I think I would have let go the camera and try a rescue, but maybe he's been maried longer then me :

I saw the "attack" footage - it was from Hawaii I think. I actually don't think it was a real attack, just toying - I don't think the whale (pilots are actually giant members of the dolphin family) realized that humans are pretty frail creatures compared to them and pulling a human down 40 feet in jest might freak them out.

Having said that, I would think twice about getting into the water with a pilot whale, especially one that seemed in distress. Just their size and power is very intimidating. I'm also very wary of the big bottle nose dolphins, as they have been seen smashing the life out of harbour porpoises - they're definitely not the cute 'n cuddly "Christians" that some folks think they are

Regards

P.
