I was lucky enough to get invited along with the Chris Carr charter for the 9th Annual Hawks Nest Billfish Blast in Cat Island. Captains Joe Trainor and Thomas Neligon took care of us and had some beers iced down for our arrival and it only got better from there.
Day 1 fishing started about 5 minutes after "lines in" as we got piled on by some lunker dolphin to 40lbs and small blackfin. Joe weaved his way in to one of his secret haunts and it wasn't long before we got our first billfish!!! With Chris Carr on the rod, the ~70lb white did not stand a chance. We finished up Day 1 taking a dolphin to the scale which ended up being just short of the lead fish.
Day 2 fishing was much the same, getting hooked up early and often with dophin and blackfin. In the afternoon, our billfish bite came, and this time it was Bob Apple who went to work. Twenty minutes later, with Thomas Neligon leadering the 200+lb blue marlin, the captain and crew of the LOW PROFILE took the lead in both the day two daily and the overall points! Icing on the cake came with just a half hour left on the day two clock when a nice sail came tight and I had the honor this time. We got the release there as well and ended day two 2 for 2 on billfish and sitting pretty.
Day 3 fishing followed suit for us but this time Joe had some company in his area. We continued to stick it to the dolphin and tuna, boating a yellowfin that would be just shy of the lead tuna. We raised several bills, but they were unfortunately only window shopping. The only two billfish on the day were released by a neighboring boat, but unfortunately for them, it was not enough to take over our lead.
Congratulations to Joe, Thomas, and the Chris Carr charter - Hawks Nest Billfish Blast Champs!!!!
