    Hawaii fishing,

Can someone on here from Hawaii send me a pm. I have a few questions for you. I would appreciate it. thanks, I am thinking of buying a boat and shipping it there to fish. For me its all about geography and living life. I want some advice on a size boat and fishing. Im done with the long runs and long prep. I dont even care if I eat the fish anymore beyond one fish. This boy has got to have flip flops on. thanks,

Been to Hi a couple of times - there are some amazingly small boats fishing for some damned big fish - It was pretty cool seeing 13 ft Whalers rigged with 80Ws.

On the Big Island, Kona side, Lots of Bertram 31s - in fact I think the largest sportfish I saw in the harbor was a fiftyish Hatteras...

Plus a 3 mile ride. Im thinking less than 30 ft. Newer, easy to care for. I can fly cheaper than all the maintenance and up keep of a bigger boat in the states. Plus, did I mention the flip flops? I want a change in life from all the same old new jersey, get ready, wax on, wax off, boat slip, winter storage, weather sucks, routine. It aint the size of the boat, its the location. I gotta go.

Fishing out of Kona, under 30 ft. is all you need. Between being on the lee side of the island, and putting the spread out as soon as you clear the rocks, you have no running time at all. It is an amazing place to fish. Marlin and tuna less than a mile from the beach.

Alex are you thinking of relocating? If not remember the old axiom, "if it flies, floats or f$%ks... rent it don't buy it."

If you are going to stay on the east coast and put a boat over there to fish, by the time you get it there, maintain it and pay to keep it there it would be much cheaper to charter guys like Jason Holtz, Marlin Parker or Kevin Nakamaru (not to mention you would probably catch more too).

If you are moving there then this is a worthwhile thought process. Out of Kona you could get by on a 30 ish foot boat (you like blackfins, stick with that), some heavy tackle and a good selection of plugs. Put a couple of lighter rods on there for when the spearfish are thick, some bait rods to catch aku or whatever the livebait du jour is, and you are good to go.

In the beginning i would still hire someone local for a little while to help you learn the ropes over there, thats a good idea anytime you relocate.
