    Hawaii-Big Island

I got a free ticket to stay in big island Hawaii for when ever I want it. My uncle just bought a house there and he's home for the holidays here in PA. He told me that they go out anywhere form 1-15 miles off shore and catch tuna till their arms fall off. And what I'm really looking for is that they surf fish off the cliffs for giant jacks. They blitz at night and take swimming plugs and jigs. THey use heavy breakaway heavers on conventional reels. He said 40-60lbs is average and his nefew landed one this year that was 136lbs. What a freaking rush. Paker21, LT you wanna go. My cousin Miky runs a 26' center console and needs us to crank in tunnies. That's what he does for a living there. Sells fish. Oh yeh he tries to shake off the marlin because they are a nuscense. $600 flight though! But free sleeping and boating.

The "Big Jacks" are really Giant Trevaly, they're called Ulua in Hawaiian. Most of the fishing off the cliffs for them is bait fishing, they have to swim the baits out to where they want them. Tuna fishing is mostly a summertime thing, not many tunas around during the winter, unless you're talking about skipjacks.

Hey Mako Mike, I've been doing some research on this and glad to hear from you. My uncle was calling them Uluas, but I did know what he was talking about. He described the fish to me and I figured it was a jack. I hear they are active all year. It looks like the good months for most species is May-August. My cousin Mike, which I have not met, launches his boat out of Konoa or kono, I think. You been there of around there. If so I love to chat with yah more to get some more info. I'll be reaching my cousin soon to talk about it. Thanks TT

    TT,
what isalnd is your uncle on? I spent most of my time in Hawaii on the big island, Kona side. The main harbor there is call Honakahu. There is a smaller harbor ( Actually bigger, but its mainly commercial) up north called Wainae. You're right Ulua are around all year long. Uluas are the adults of the species the hawaiians call the juvenal fish papio. The juvenials are a blast on light spinning tackle.

My cousin is at Wainae, his is 100% commercial. My uncle told me today the name but I couldn't remember. I put a post up under the Avets about Big Island. What were you there for and did you make out well. I'd really like to go in the winter because I'm here on the east coast. But like the rest of the country the winter is not the best spot. I may go around May next year or late this summer/early fall. Aparently my cousin Mike caught his biggest GT on a white eel skin/fillet. I'd like to get some marlin in too, but Mike doesn't fish for them much, but obviously catches them by mistake. It looks like charters aren't as expensive as here on the east coast. That seem to be the case?

I've spent months out there on vacation. Usually fishing everyday, either from shore or on a charter. Winter isn't bad, in fact its the best time of year of you want to catch a short nosed spearfish and the Kona-Kohala coast is one of the few places in the world where you have realistic shot at catching one. During the winter there are still some blue marlin around and the striped marlin move in during the winter, so its not all bad The reef fish are available all year, so you're not limiting your reef fishing by going during the winter. Generally charters are a lot cheaper out there, mainly because they don't have to go very far to catch. I caught one 500+ blue marlin just past the harbor buoy. If you do go and want to go shore fishing bring plenty of tackle. The lava and coral eat tackle and everything is much more expensive out there.
