    Hatteras report 5/7

    Friday 5/7 Hatteras Report
Fished on Matador with Capt Jake and 5 other friends from MD and NC. As just about everyone knows, the waters off HI still aren't what they used to or should be for this time of year. The cold, mixed waters are still covering what should be really productive waters. Stopped off at ORI Fishing Center on the drive down Thurs and things there were not very encouraging either. Anyway, off we go just before 6AM to the grouper numbers first in winds NE 14-21 mph not predicted by NOAA the day before. It was a little rough, but nothing the Matador can't handle. First three sets of numbers don't produce even though the drift was pretty decent, finally at the fourth set at around 10 AM we start a pick on the tiles hoping for the grouper to start piling on. Still a slow pick of tiles and by around noon we decide to head for some rock piles for jigging for AJ's and other stuff. When we get to the rocks we get bit off by a wahoo on the jig right away, then get into the AJ's with non-stop action. But after the first hour of that we have attracted the attention (and wrath) of the local shark population, and they are taking their half of the action from that point on. We got a few of the sharks up near the boat, and one on the leader at around 2 PM, then decided to head back toward the beach for the cobia bite which had just started up a couple days before. Once at the beach we saw three groups of cobia that we cast to, and got one hook up on the third group before they stopped swimming on top and showing themselves as the winds began again to pick up. We were supposed to fish also Saturday, but when we arrived at the dock the winds were already gusting to 29 mph, and supposed to get worse, so we called it off. On the drive back home just in the first two hours to get to the VA border the winds were howling over 30 mph so we figured we made the right call. As usual Capt Jake worked hard to make things happen, the cold front that got there Thurs night didn't help things. We did get some fish for the cooler and grills at home.
