Fishing with a couple of friends on my dads boat, old 1986 Post 46 out of IRI, year was 1989. Sharking was hot so we headed out about 40 miles or so, not quite sure where, maybe the hambone or almost to the Hot Dog, set up the chum slick, put out 3 baits and all I can remember from this point is a steady string of blue whalers one after the other.
They were free swimming around the boat, biting the chum bucket, we even gaffed one swimming by (don't do this people), bent a brand new gaff. We released everything at this point including 2 small makos, 2 tigers, a dozen blue whalers.
We decide to setup overnight and chunk for tuna, so we head out to the Baltimore in about 100 fathoms and do the chunking thing, pick up some decent size yft's and even had a few shark encounters, when all of the sudden outta the darkness, below the stern something glowing white and about 15 ft. long is floating below the surface. It was just me and the captain up at this point, around 2 am and we're screaming at the rest of the crew to come check this out. We couldn't tell if it was a Great White, or a huge Jelly Fish or what.
The only other thing it could be was a "humboldt squid". I've been thinking about this creature for years and only recently have I come to this conclusion.
After swimming with the boat for a while it just turned straight up/down and bolted to the deep with a huge spray of water bursting right next the starboard/stern.
I was freaking out at this point. So I went in to the cabin to calm down, not having seen or even heard of anything at this point in my life.
That was one trip I'll never forget.
