Hangover Boxed Hoos hitting the fan

On Tidal Fish there was a post about refreezing ballyhoos.

I replied to the effect that I will take prepped baits (eyeballed and pooped) and lay them in a beer flat or baking tray on a layer of salt, backs down and layer salt on top of them to freeze and re-use at a later date. I have also done this with rigged baits when I have a 2 day layover between trips. (Hangover boxed)

One response that I received is that I should post that reply over here and watch the poop hit the fan. So here it is. Whats all the guff?

I have done this, and seen it done by some top crews in a variety of places. As a matter of fact, alot of guys have intentionally prepped and frozen/refrozen baits in Mexico, Venezuela, and Costa Rica, to have when the bite lights up.

Alright cockpit monkeys, let the poop fly

    Franky,

I have done it, and almost exactly as you described. Now, if I am marlin fishing...and especially tournament fishing...I would never do such a thing, fresh baits all the way. But if I have some baits left over that are in excellent shape...yep, I refreeze with great care and pull them out another day when we are meat fishing. No poop from me on this one.

Holy POOP! lol, what a poop-stirrer. Who gives a poop, do it your own way. I definately refreeze on occasion- often too. If I'm lucky enough, I don't have to because trips are stacked up back to back.

I usually start the day with fresh baits, and do avoid freezing baits that are rigged. If it's on wire, I don't mind at all, but I think mono absoarbs a certain amount of water. It would be nice to have an expert comment on any effects freezing can have on different leader materials. Growing up, I've done plenty of sub-freezing trout fishing, but thats a different story lol. I wonder if it's a different mono makeup.

Box has a point with what a charter may think when the ole zip lock fires outa the ice chest. But, from a mate's perspective, when the bossman finds out you saved him a few bucks (and of coarse thats the ONLY purpose ), he's a bit more happy with you. Anytime you can svae him money and yourself time, it's great.... And I really dont think it matters when being trolled at 6 kts

But, they REALLY come in handy when the boss insists on passing that damn poly ball 1000 times, or when the bite is so hot, they dont have a chance to blow out. My most common use is at the end of the day when I only have an hour or two of fishing left. Maybe I just got covered up and only have 3 remaining hoos but I know were heading in- no reason to thaw out a brand new pack if I might never even use them; and getting caught outa baits is a sin. I don't freeze twice, outa principle I guess.

Bally sides make great flounder baits too... I'll hafta try the small behind a teaser. I've tried split bills for small rockfish, but not enough to deem it successfull or not. A whole ballyhoo will absolutly smack minnows in a trap too.

Barry, If you fish the Old Grounds this summer give it a try. Last summer on 1 trip we had 5 fluke over 6 pounds. All of them were caught on a small ballyhoo and bucktail combo.
