Handline Planer Depth???

How do you calculate how deep a #24 Old Salty planer is running if it is rigged on 400# mono?

Let's say you want to run the planer 30' deep, how much mono do you need to let out before you cleat it off?

I'm sure there is some compicated trig equation using the angle of the mono but is there an easier way to get a ballpark figure? If so, how do you alter the equation for different size planers?

I have always just let a bunch of line out until I felt it was enough but never really knew where the planer was trluy at.

Just put your boat at trolling speed in thirty feet of water off the beach and slowly let out planer line until the planer trips from hitting the bottom, mark your mono. presto....
