I lived in St. Pete/Tampa for a couple of yrs...You can virtually catch Snook, Tarpon, Trout and Red fish from any shore line, bridge, inlet or a short wading distance to a flat...20-80 miles for bottom fishing (Grouper/Snapper)...give or take 80 miles+ for Marlin,Tuna, Wahoo, Swords...some nice bottom contour out there...the area is called the Steps...The fishing way offshore can be stellar...many don't venture that far offshore...virtually untouched...Those who do are rewarded kindly...solid big fish.
The Gulf coast of Fla. is a nice place to retire...good fishing...slow way of life and relatively cheap.
