Great White questions for the shark scientists

Out sharking yesterday and inundated with blue sharks. Suddenly they are gone. 15 minutes later a big white is seen circling the boat, about 5-10' under the surface.

He went around and under the boat a few times, and was there for about an hour. We finally had to move to get away from him.

Apparently there have been alot of sightings this year, but I have not heard of one eating a bait. Why is that? I would think they would pounce on an easy meal of a whole bluefish drifting lazily through the slick. What are they feeding on that they are not interested in our baits? There were no mammals in the area, so I would think they would be feeding on some type of fish. I don't think there is much in the way of tunas around either. Maybe feeding on the blue sharks

Certainly wasn't looking to hook up, just curious as to the behavior

No pics, the white never broke the surface and was tough to see clearly without polarized glasses.

I'm no expert, but some A-Holes out of Indian River, DE killed one earlier this year. I guess they eat bait every now & then.

It's a good question. Are they eating whales or porpoise in the area? Other sharks? It would have been interesting if you had a blue dog hooked while the white was there!

He was eyeing your boat not the blue fish
Is there a whale migration ? Noaa had a watch for the Delaware waters. I hope he did not look at the blue fish as a single potato chip. Maybe they do not eat every day and wait for the big meal. Like a blue dog drifting down after a good 30 minute fight or a rat mako doing the same. Released, I have seen the blue dogs slowly fade out of site only to catch the same critter 2 hours later with the hook and cut leader. He was lucky the white did not have him for brunch while recovering from the 30 minute fight. The same goes for tuna or marlin. They go into a trance it seams and drift away. This would be the perfect time for a white to capitalize on a meal . Good question DD

Double D , I;m not an expert by no means , but after fishing with frank Mundus enough , it seems our conversations always turned to the Great white ! He has told me that , if your boat engines are on , the electrical field put out by the engines is enough to bring them around , it seems they are very sensitive to these electrical fields , Frank said by nature they are very curious animals as well. maybe all the blue dogs got his curiousity going! Also after a good feed Whites dont really need to eat for sometimes quite a while. They have even been known to poke thier heads out of the water for a look see ! Still what a great sight to see !

All he was doing was checking things out , you could have tried numerous things tricks to entice him ( But Why ). Believe me they eat your standard off the shelf shark bait , This guy probably wasn't hungry !!!!!

    Interesting...

The engines were off, but he came to the boat after Brian banged on the hull a little bit. He definitely turned to look to see where the sound was coming from

Had one chew on the rudder years ago, probably due to the slight electrical field

I'm just glad he didn't come in for a taste while we were dehooking the bluedoggies

Just your electronics mainly your color scope is enough to draw there attention. Ya wouldn't think it but scopes make a racket under water.

BTW where did you have the blue dogs ???
