    Granders north of the Carolinas?

    Just curious.

Has anyone here ever released or boated a fish anywhere north of the Carolinas they think was honestly 1,000LB class? I keep hearing about Canyon granders, but I don't know anyone (except for a few blowhards) who really says they've caught one.

We raised a monster at Veatch in September, but only got a quick look. I'd say she was every bit of 700, but the other guy who saw her swears it was bigger. We're both very inexperienced, so it was probably only 100 or so and probably a white.

So, have any of you released or boated a grander class fish up north?

    Check out the state records

    New Jersey- 1,046lb

    New York- 1174lb

    Maryland- 942lb

In the early 90's we got spooled by a blue on the east wall of the Wilmington Canyon that was well over 1,000. It ate a Green Machine on the right short rigger and spooled a 80 wide at full drag before we could clear the rest of the rods. We were fishing in a fleet of maybe 20 boats and everyone that saw it greyhounding behind our boat said on the radio that it was well over a grand.

The northeast canyons hold some massive blue marlin durring the summer but the only problem is nobody wants to waste all the money on fuel searching all summer for 1 fish.

the same goes for 1000 lb mako. They are there but the runners are few and far between. We all understand the rising cost of fuel, presently, is hampering the long runs

Yep. Not that I know anything more about marlin fishing than I've read here, but this is a big fish.

The only grander class fish in the Atlantic I have ever seen were all north. We had one a couple days before the WMO about five years ago near the 461 lump that was a grand and maybe 1100. Late seventies we let one go that class or bigger in the hudson. Saw another that year that piled on a 40-50lb wahoo we were fighting also in the hudson.
The biggest blue I ever saw was in the mud hole near the lilian wreck while sharkin. The fish was mottled in color and very sick looking heading right past us and up the hole. I'd hate to throw a number on it but the tip of its tail was arm pit high as it went by and it looked to be every bit as big as the 1656 Bart Miller had in his old office. No we never got a shot at that one.
We sppooled a 130 outside the baltimore in the mid nineties during the ma500 on board Gold Rush. That fish was big but I don't think went anywhere near a grand.

    Thanks fmoore for that link

Wauwinet. it was quite the summer!

this fish was 82 inches in girth and 103 inches long (almost 9 feet). using some age old formulas, we calculated it to be over 1,000 lbs.

the fish never jumped once from 2:30 pm hookup until 9:30 pm. they were fishing for YFT an it hit a titanium squid bar stinger. they thought it was a giant BFT. 30 class Shimano w/ 50lb mono.

A 103 inch blue marlin from the fork of the tail to the tip of the lower jaw is only a 350-400 pound fish. Are you sure you have the length measurment right? The fish appears to bigger then that in the picture. Most granders are 150+ inches.
