On our charters we need to put something in the box as most would not opt for the marlin only spread. What we began to develop was a "Big Spread" predawn and early morning the retireming that to a tuner spread for most of the day returning back to big before setting up for a nite chunk/ swordie set up. So we try and maximize our time out there which means we may miss some blue girls along the way.

Good on you for putting that commitment into the blue girl pursuit. Time in the office will get the rewards.

Here's to sharing a call next season out in the blue water

    mmm, Mrs Hays.
I'm intrigued. Why the blue marlin spread early and the tuna spread the rest of the day ? Most places I've fished it'd be the other way round, with the bite time for tuna is during the low light conditions and then we'd aim to pick up marlin during the dead part of the day.

The reason I think this works is not centred around the tuna fishing (because those lowlight conditions are the best time for tunas) but because during the rest of the day, if the tunas are down, you stand a better chance of piquing the interest of a blue if you run one over and they're not already fixiated on something else. From personal experience I wouldn't say that dawn and dusk are prime blue marlin times for lure fishermen - maybe different in the NE canyons if that is when your tide change is, during the best part of the months.

    Any thoughts ?

Roddy I agree with your statements that tuna are for certain a low light predator but we base this more on big eye than marlin. Our Big eye bite is low light and no light and our tuner (YFT and LFT) are typical volunteers throughout the day as are mahi. Now our trips are all overnight so our tempo is leave early and make the six hour run go lines in around 12:30 and pull the spread until dark or just after. Depending on the month that could give us some nine hours of trolling with a spread change for the last two hours.

We take a break and clear the pit have dinner then we get the hydro-glow going and the chunk set up in place and some vert jigging. We keep this up all night and then before pre-dawn we normally will begin once again with a big lure spread for Big Eye and Marlin then around 8-10 go back to a tuner -dodo - wahoo spread until lunch then pick em up and begin to steam home.

One thing that is 100% certain that predawn and last light bites are epic. If I had only one time that I could fish it would be pre-dawn. Pre-dawn in these canyons is very special at least for me. Agree that at times tuners get lock jaw but most of the time we can raise them most likely becasue Cappy Say has made some adjustments to the mojo of the day.

If you ever head this way I would love to have you on board for a trip

I promise I could keep my questions down to a few thousand

I still thnk your small NEMI is the best!!!!
