Grand Slam????

I've always wondered...why in the sportfishing worlds is a "grand slam" only when you catch 3 types of different fish (there are many types obviously). In my opinion, shouldn't a true grand slam consist of 4 different fish? A grand slam is 4 in baseball. A true grand slam should be : bonefish, permit, redfish, tarpon. OR : white marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, and maybe tuna or sword.

Considering something to be a grand slam when you only catch 3 species is pretty lame if you ask me. Wrong terminology.

I dont know how the Tuna would have any involvement in a billfish grandslam either way though?

They've always had four species slams called super slams... Thye add a swrod to the billfish and add a mutton to the flats one...

Now me I have other less known slams of my own... Neeter, king, cuda, jack = Trash can grand slam...
Trigger, sand eel, squirrelfish, tang = Reef trash can slam

no doubt, i have a few personal grand slams myself....

flounder, croaker, sea trout, drum= the whites creek slam

white perch, rockfish, bluefish, pickeral= magothy river slam

personal slams always have 4 species.

A true offshore slam should be : tuna, mahi, wahoo, and billfish.

a tuna slam should be : bluefin, blackfin, yellowfin, and bigeye (or any other species including bonita)

a billfish slam should be = white, blue, sailfish, and any other type of billfish (including black, sword, and spearfish)

In my opinion, catching 3 species and calling it a grand slam is a joke. Its like hitting a triple in baseball and the throw to third gets by the third baseman and you score. In little league they call that a home run. I'd like to know who invented the term "grand slam" as it applies to fishing, and hear why in fact you can consider anything associated with 3 a grand slam. I think its totally silly.

Along the same lines.....Why do we fly flags upside down when we release billfish and fly them rightside up when a billfish is killed? Wouldn't a dead fish more closely resemble the upside down flag vs. the right side up one?

Don't forget the Gulf Coast Winter Slam - Salt Catfish, Stingray and Puffer... I'm a master of that one...

you would need to throw in a jack or a small shark to make it a true grand slam according to the new rules. good luck though, that sounds like a pretty prestigious slam.......

How about duck slams

Pamlico Reef Slam: Pintail, Redhead, Brant
Sedge Slam: Black Duck, Woody, Gadwall
Nothins Flyin and the dog is bored Slam: Bufflehead, Harry Head, Coot

BTW, the only real slam around here is the billfish slam.

Blue, white, Sail, and I have been fourtunate enought to catch three of them.

I hope many more.

Next time you get the Blue, White, and Sail, try a deep drop for Sword and go for the TRUE GRAND SLAM !!!!!

Lets's face it: how can we consider catching 3 species a grand slam ??? All these years, fisherman have been lying to themselves !!!! I'm not one to be into politics, or lobbying for anything at all, ever, I pretty much just go with the flow.

But I can't take it anymore !!!! I'm starting a movement to have the definition of a grand slam changed to represent what it truly is !!! You guys can brag about your triples all day long, but a grand slam is a grand slam, and 3 fish don't make one up !!! Who's with me !!!!!!!
