Good fishing in March and April?
I would like to know where fishing (tuna and billfish) is good in March and April. I am thinking about staying there for a month so the location can not be too small and boring. Acapulco seems like a great place to stay in but is there any serious game fishing there? Costa Rica is another location I am considering but I heard that the best season there were later in the year. I am very grateful for all suggestions Andree |

Prime sailfishing time in Costa rica is from December into April for most of the country. The northern part (Guanacaste heats up in the summer months. There are always some tuna around, but the better size fish start to show up around April or so.

HI Andree,
Capt Gene is right, fishing is pretty much at it's peak in Costa Rica at that time. It is the height of the sailfish season in the southern and central parts. We also have plenty of marlin, yellowfin, dorado, roosters and pargo at that time. It is one of my favorite places in the world to fish then. It would be my first pick! Other places to consider are also Ixtapa, Mx at that time. Not as good fishing but still very good. It is also like Southern Costa Rica, very reasonable. Also, on the other side of Mex. Riviera Maya and Isla Mujers. They have some good white and small blue marlin at that time with a few sails left over. Not sure how there inshore fishing is though. Acapulco doesn't really have a good fishing infrastructure. They have fishing but the capts there in general are just going to take you for a boat ride. I wouldn't suggest it. Outside town is also very unsafe! Last edited by thums up; 11-20-2008 at 11:16 AM. |

I know..I know..Panama Panama Panama...
While I may be partial to Panama beause of the time I have spent there... I believe that March and April is an excellent time of year there. Not too mention between pangas, motherships, and center console charter boats...between Ladrones, Montuosa, Hannibal, Contreras, Coiba, Canales, Frailes, Perlas, Zane Grey, more rivermouths than you could imagine....oh and almost forgot...nothing that resembles crowded.. my 2 cents... Try Pesca Panama for the mothership trip, Paradise Lodge for the out of the way personal trip (Chad regularly has guys that stay for weeks on end, Tropic Star, and the Pedasi area for panga fishing..try Pimply in Ciruelo Good luck and bring the report from that trip...I am jelouse Curtis |

Anywhere in Central America is a good bet for Mar-Apr. As in Isla(Cancun). I would have to say that Feb-Mar is our PRIME TIME here in Costa Rica. We are out of Los Suenos and have fished with many SFC members. Come on down. But don't wait too long no matter where you go, as I know I only have about 12 days still open in Mar.

Van Halen says it best.........."PANAMA, PAN-A-MA-HA"
Black Marlin up to 1000lbs and Tuna to over 300lbs. If you like sea terds (AKA sailfish........not a fan myself), consider going to CR (which is one of the better spots in the world). Nothing boring about Panama City, that's for sure....... |

place for a month for billfishing
You may want to think about quepos, Costa Rica. I will be fishing out of there again this coming season. There are quite a few fishing bums who hang there and have become good friends with. You can even find a place to rent for a month if you wanted to. You don't need a car to get around and it's not too boring at all.
