Clint - you and your father-in-law were good crew. I'm glad y'all had the patience to do drift after drift for 5 hours before we found the right depth for them. You got the Catch-All Tilefish 101 immersion course.
Next time I'm bringin' hand grenades. Then I can use a scoop net and leave the ElectraMate back at the crib.
Last night I tried some of the Tile steaks done with that Tilefish Steaks w/ Tomatoes & Olives recipe that I posted on the 100FFC site. Succulent! My favorite is still fried Tempura style.
JUST CHECKING H20 BUT ITS LIGHT OUT IN THE PICTURE WITH THE TILE---ONLY REASON I ASK IS BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ANYONE CATCHING THEM AT NIGHT. - BY THE WAY NICE CATCH. THANKS
the tile was caught early morning after chunking all night for tuna.... Sorry that sounded confusing! Yea we picked up the tile probly around 9am, very hazy day... Using an electromatic penn senator a window sash weight and some Clam. He engulfed the bait about 15 seconds after it hit the bottom.
Our fishery must be different down here. They seem to prefer squid the most, with a drop or two of shedder crab oil on each bait. We catch 'em 24 hours a day but the Golden Tiles only bite on the weekends; they take the weekdays off.
For the Northeast guys, does anyone know how far East the tiles are? I have never heard of them east of Hudson. I imagine the eastern canyons like Veatch and Hydro would be tough to fish with the strong currents.
I would think you could find a few in the fishtales , trouble is its small not a lot of wiggle room . I'd venture a good guess there is some there though. Can't say for sure though as I've never dropped for them there but the guys in Montauk gotta be getting them from somewhere and its only 60 miles to the tails from there +/- .
