Gamakatsu SL12 Hooks
Has anyone ever used these before, i know they were made for offshore fly fishing but have also been used for lure fishing. I like the idea that you can take a couple wraps of a fish beside the boat, straiten the hook and have an easy release. The same thing worries me about having the hook straiten prematurely. I was just wondering if any has had any experiences with these and how much drag i can put on them before they straiten.

me llamo SUPER Dave
I have a bunch of these hooks, they're the new edition of the "Trey Combs" bluewater fly hooks.
Give me till next week and I'll do a few pull tests.
I don't think you'll get them to bend as easy as you think. They are pretty thin, and don't have welded eyes. It will be interesting to see the results.
Fly fishermen generally don't use more than a 20lb tippet....to stay IGFA legal at least, so I wouldn't say the hooks really get tested by them.

Sit down Shut up And fish
If you want a billfish hook designed for straightening out by the boat, try Peter Pakula's KATANA hooks. Read all about them in a recent thread :

Thanks for the input guys, im excited to see how they test. Roddy i thought those katana hooks were the same thing as the sl12 but they teflon coated? are there any other differences? What would the disadvantages of using one of these hooks be?
